Subject: Ralph Fiennes approached for a role in Bond 23. Oh please God, let him say yes

The former Mr Winslet (Sam Mendes) looks like he's trying to round up a quality cast for Bond 23. Aside from Javier Bardem who said earlier this week that he's been approached to play the villain, Mendes is also after the king of evil doers, Ralph Fiennes to play a "deeply complex" role in the movie.
This sounds a bit odd for a Bond movie, because you normally have Bond, the villain (who used to be after global domination but will now settle for a fat pile of cash), girl who gets shagged and killed, henchman who feels no pain and girl who gets shagged at the end. You can count the number of deeply complex characters in Bond movies on the fingers of one hand with all of its fingers amputated. Developing a deeply complex character would normally detract from all the car chases, gun fights, explosions and shagging that we expect, nay, demand from a Bond film.
But it seems Mendes is going all Christopher Nolan on us and according to Bardem is creating something more "nuanced" than your average Bond movie. Now I'm not really a Mendes fan (aside from Away We Go), but this all sounds quite intriguing and maybe a little bit promising.

Does this mean that Bond is a go-ahead then? I thought Bond was under threat due to the implosion of the film studio (MGM?)

Casino Royale and Complex of Sultan were steps in the right direction, with Bond at least.
Their are rumours of Blofeld making his modern day debut,...

That was what I thought of when I read that Fiennes was approached.

I want more Quantum (preferably including the splendidly creepy Jesper Christensen as Mr White) and a proper team up with Felix Leiter.

I would like to see more done with Felix as I think the two (Craig and Wright) have a good rapport.
I could see Blofeld being more of an anti-Bond in the newer films. Not the leader of a group but he knows about all of them and works in the background manipulating everyone against eachother to his own ends, ect ect.

Apparently this film is being tied into the 50th anniversary of Dr. No, so there is a possibility that Blofeld and the good doctor will be dueling villains; perhaps with Blofeld as a sort of gray character.

The last time they did the whole anniversary thing, we got Die Another Day, a mish mash of stupid in-jokes (ooh, check out Halle Berry being Ursula Andress and lets do the Union Jack parachute joke again) and no plotting.
Quantum is a sufficiently strong idea without the need to weave in past elements like Dr No, Blofeld etc.

With the last two films trying to show how Quantum had infiltrated everything, I wonder if this 'complex' character might be an agent who's connected to Quantum.
The 'complicated' bit means it probably won't be a straight face/heel turn, maybe he's been pressured into doing something for Quantum and he's got divided loyalties or something.
Still, I like Mendes so there's hope for this.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Maybe Fiennes will play a double-agent, or perhaps some sort of 'rival Bond'. That would be interesting.
Actually, come to think of it Ralph Fiennes would have made a brilliant Bond.
