Hello all,
Bladebaka here again. This time, with a short tutorial on how to make your own Storm Shields for non-terminator armored marines.
Materials needed:
Scissors
Plasticard (I used old Gift Cards that I stole from the trash can at work)
Sprue Clippers
Template - This is what you wish the design on your SS to be
Glue
Combat Shield from the Assault Marine sprues
Lets get started, shall we?
Step 1:
cut out your template and glue onto your plasticard. I used the Raven Guard sigil, so at first I just cut it out in a pentagon outline.
Step 2:
finish cutting out your bit of plasticard. At this stage, I did all the detail cuts between the wings, tail, head and legs. Score the back and glue your resulting plasticard bit on some more plasticard. Trim the second layer so that it defines and outlines the detail bit.
Step 3:
shave down the front of the Combat Shield, like so.
Step 4:
score the back of your symbol and score the front of your Combat Shield. Glue.
And there you go! Chop off the hand of the shield and attach to any arm you choose, or just chop off the hand of a left arm you have lying around, and you're good to go! Enjoy your new Storm Shield!
Here's one on the model:

@ Hadouken: It's what comes from being poor and using your old phone. 2MP isn't good anymore!
@alex: I used to work there, and liberated them before they were trashed.

I love the idea of using old gift cards for plasticard. I am definetly going to have to raid the trash cans at work as well

Yeah, it hit me one day as I was about to toss a few in the trash. "Hey, these are made of plastic. Free plasticard!"
Plus, it's good for the environment as you're recycling. Save all the extra bits of it that you cut off to give some more weight to something (same with sprues) or even stick them on ork stuff for homemade mega-armor or to ork up some vehicles!

Do you mean, finished as in on the model? Because the last pic up there is the finished product, albeit on its face.
Here's one on the model, sorry for image quality (old phone):
Hope this helped.
Cheers,

Yes, the picture quality is crap; Deal with it. I don't have access to an epic camera right now, and honestly, a camera is low-priority for me at the moment. I will see about borrowing a friends/family members' camera, but I don't see this happening for a while.
Sorry if I sound snappish, but I've been getting a lot of flak over my picture quality recently; I can't afford to spend thousands of dollars on models AND tech AND CoL right now...
Pretty much:
Step 1: File down the flashy gubbins on the front of the Combat Shield.
*Step 2: Pick an icon you want on your Storm Shield, like the eagle/crosses on the Termie ones. Print out a few on one sheet of paper, cut out.
*Step 3: Paste onto plasticard/gift cards using
PVA/Elmer's Glue, let dry. Cut out shape.
Step 4: peel off paper. Cut out another piece of plasticard/ gift card that you want to be the basic shape of the Storm Shield. Glue onto the front of your Combat Shield.
*Step 5: Glue your icon onto your newly-minted Storm Shield. Voila! You are done!
* = Skip this if you want to paint your own symbols on/ are using bitz, like DA/BA sigils from kits like the Stormraven
hope this helped,

Make the picture from a bigger distance, then crop it. If your phone doesnt have the macro option then don't make the pics up too close.

I don't know what kind of responses you thought to elicit with this thread - what did you expect? On the one hand, it looks very intriguing, and many people would like to be able to follow this tutorial. On the other hand, the final picture of such poor quality it's completely impossible to tell what it's a picture of, let alone the details of how good your technique works. Most tutorials are worthless without good pictures and this is not an exception.
On the other hand, most of the pictures are acceptable except the last one, which makes me wonder if it's your technique rather then your hardware there. Is it possible to take a far off image, like with the others? If your camera has a timer, can you prop it up to take a pic using the timer, so your hand doesn't shake? What model phone is it: maybe someone has a similar one and can give you some tips on getting the most of it?
I don't think you need to spend a lot of money to take good pictures here. My camera was 60 bucks 3 years ago and I think I do OK. Adding a $15 tripod and using the timer was the difference between night and day for me, really.

I don't play IG, so you'd be waiting a really, really long time for one.
I'll see what I can swing, Ouze. I got a newer phone that doesn't have a bitchy machine spirit, so hopefully I can fanangle some decent pics out of it... It's just going to be the final model because I ran out of Combat Shields :(
Just for the record... I probably was shooting it a bit close.

You don't need an "epic camera", good quality cameras are pretty cheap these days and are a small expense if you're already spending thousands on stuff. It's always worthwhile owning a camera not just for taking photos of models but one day you'll probably wonder why you have no decent pics of your time in college, just a heap of space marines.

I see your point, Howard, and I shall act upon it... Whenever I manage to get my car fixed, an apartment, and a full time job (not necessarily in that order), a real camera is one of my planned expenditures.
I'll see if I can squeeze some decent-looking pix out of my newer 2MP phone tonight after work, but it may have to wait until tomorrow.

I believe you've just confirmed the nefarious rumours that Dakka has been infiltrated by the unclean. I have informed the Inquisition of your heretical mutations, and they are en route to purge this board of your unclean presence. Please wait outside your domicile with all three hands in the air to show your compliance.
Thank you for your co-operation.

@Crimsonfist: Online, or just get some gift cards. They're plastic cards, and that is what I used in this tut.

hobby shops sell styrene sheet plastic (evergreen is what i see) or you can do what I do and go to your local Hardware store and buy Plastic " No Parking" or "Beware of Dog" signs. Cheap and big sheets of plasticard you can get in a variety of thicknesses. Great for Making movement trays too.
