Owings mills store in MD seems to be doing more fantasy stuff is this sort of thing pushed from HQ or is it the stores idea? Anything going on in fantasy that deserves this push?

Most likely the store. Probably has overstock of Fantasy items. My local stores are still 40k dominant.

In my area most of the big players from WHFB have slowed way down in the current edition. It changed the metagame so much, they really dont like it.

In my area WHFB has slowed down, no idea if GW is pushing it because this is happening everywhere, I think thats a big jump in logic.

Haven't noticed it. I basically ignore anything that even mentions 'fantasy' or "war of the ring'

Ditto.

Even though I like the aesthetics of the Skaven and Dwarfs I have no interest in WHFB at all. Painting dozens and dozens of minis, rank/block movement, just dont care for it all. Seems to me about as exciting as warfare during the Revolutionary War.

Whats my game?

Me too, if anything I wonder how to convert the models for use in 40k more often than anything else.

EDIT:

OT, I think GW is always pushing Fantasy, not intended as flippant, just, it's what they do.

I've seen the same things for the few times I've actually visited the Owings Mills stores on the way to my brothers house so i end up getting a game or two in before we head home. Though Whitemarsh seems to be more 40k. depends on the store i suppose...

Runnin up on ya.

If GW were really interested in pushing fantasy they would have put an army book out by now...you now, it's been the better part of a year since they released the new rules....

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

I imagine that it would be all about the players who regularly visit the store. If they've got a strong preference towards fantasy, then you're probably going to see the store leaning in that direction.

It looks like the complete opposite is happening in my local GW. At first me and a couple of mates played 40K, but we have played it years on end. Now, we all just want to jump into WHFB. But yeah, Fantasy is being played less over time. I fear an extiction.

I played both 40k and Fantasy for awhile but I promptly sold my Tomb Kings army when I realized I was going to basically double my army size to still play 2k point games with 8th ed rules.

I wouldn't say my local GW is pushing Fantasy any more or less. I have noticed that almost all the intro games that are run are 40K. Seems since 8th came out, WFB is being played less. Hardly scientific, but as an example, this past weekend there were four games of 40k, two games of WoTR, and 0 fantasy. Up until last October, you could walk in almost any given weekend and seen at least one, often two WFB games in progress with a decent amount of WFB minis being worked on in the Hobby section. Not so much currently.

Overall, other than the initial reaction to 8th Ed coming out and the regular WFB players trying out the new rules, Fantasy really seems to have fallen off a cliff. The new Skaven releases sparked some interest but not really a bunch of games. It’s almost like everyone is waiting to see what the first true 8th ed army book will be like before getting serious about WFB again.

Has it really been that long already? And yea, no list books yet, seems strange....

Who knows what GW is slinging around here. Don't shop with them and never will. I buy from LGS's only or online, where no one is pushing the new overpriced crap that I don't need on me.

At GMI Games in Riverside, not once have I had a sales pitch about something. Catherine asks if there's any specific I want, and she lets me know that if I can't find it there, she can order it and have it shipped to my house(I'm a bit of a drive away). She's never once tried to get me to buy the latest releases or try some other game or anything like that. She understands what kind of people her customers are.

Given sales targets, staff will probably push what sells, so in trhe US 40K mostly.

But as a corporate entity then I would suggest yesterdays announcement of the O&G release should be evidence enough that they are "pushing it, pushing it reall good" as the great poets Salt and Pepper would say.

They don't seem to be pushing anything. I mean, how many months was it between 8th Ed and the O&G book? And over in 40K land, they're not telling us anything about their next release.

No, GW don't really "push" their products (unless it's behind the façade of a hobby article or anything with the title 'What's New Today'). What they're way more into is surprise, as in "Surprise! Here's a Codex that we could have spent months hyping up and previewing, but for some asinine reason chose not too!". So, not a push, really...

Is it really that bad? I have read it, but I have heard an awful lot of poor reviews, mostly from in person local people who liked the older version(s).

What changed? Was it really that big a of departure?

An emphasis on EVEN LARGER units (I know, big surprise here! ) and the changes to the magic system have left many 'veterans' cold to the new edition.

A shame really, as the last edition was a lot of fun and had a lot of 'support' from the players.

8th edition hasn't really taken off around here, from what I hear!

I disagree with changes to the magic system it's smoother. As is movement, which really needed seriously hard work. Random charge at first, I was not feeling it. Now I am.

No GW does a poor job of hyping up a release. They failed their leadership/initiative check by not having at least one new army book for WHFB near launch. What are we 8 months out from 8th and Orks are another month out. So 9 months for 1 dex, some orcs, elves, rats. Seems like the next dex is another 6 months out beyond that, so 14/15 months for 2 dexs. So no they are not pushing it.
They haven't supported the new rules so initial interest has died or is dying everywhere.

M FLGS is about half 40K and half Fantasy in fair amounts, though there's also an equal amount of LOTR stuff, just it's always completely ignored every time I've ever been in there
