I was wondering if anyone had some good tips for painting an effect like paint chipping off a metal piece like on this guys jaw. Any tips would be appreciated!

Paint the chip with your edge highlight colour. Use a fine point, paint quite irregularly. Concentrate on edges (particularly where they'd come into contact with something or move).

Paint the upper side / inside of the chip with a deep shade colour. Leave it so the highlight picks out the chip appropriately (on an edge, generally this is all around the chip). Use a fine point, be neat.

If there's room, paint just a little bit inside that with your metal colour. Again, fine point, be neat.

Those just look like splodges of Boltgun Metal with smaller streaks of a lighter metallic on top (Chainmail? Mithril Silver?).

Winterdyne's suggestion is the slightly more advanced version, where you highlight as if light were catching the edge of the paint where it broke off. Practice on scrap before you try this one - when done well, this method really makes those areas pop. When done poorly (e.g. the highlight is too large and blobby, too stark, and the light source changes from chip to chip), it starts to look like a colorblind epileptic tried to paint woodland camo.

I found a tutorial on it awhile ago, unfortunately the link i saved for it isnt working. But I can describe the basics of it. you want to create a a spot of color that is a shade slightly lighter than what you used for your Basecoat, this spot of a slightly lighter shade should be in a jagged pattern, with triangles jutting out of 2 of the sides. being careful to leave a line of the lighter shade you will repaint a smaller version of the shape inside of the previous one, this time using a dark metallic like boltgun metal. after that step i believe he suggested a dark grey, this represented the ceramite of space marine armor.

I'm throwing this in here hoping it will be of use...

I saw a thread in one of the P&M forums about Forgeworlds big Marine model... The guy painting it, off the top of my head, undercoated with Boltgun, then sprayed the model with hairspray and sprinkled rock salt over it. The salt stuck in place. He painted red over the silver/salt then ran the model under cold water for a while until the salt dissolved, leaving a rather convincing paint-chipping effect in its place.
I guess you could use the technique with regular table salt on a 28mm scale model.

Forgive me if this doesn't make a lot of sense.. Rather drunk. =)

Paint the part the color you want to show through.
Let it dry, then get it slightly wet. I lick mine.
Roll it in rock salt. The salt will stick and dry to the model.
Paint over the salt, let it dry, then brush the salt off.
Nothing looks more like chipped paint than paint that has been chipped.

I wrote this up a while ago swap yellow for whatever color you'd like and you'll end up with pretty realistic results.

I've seen that done dozens of times but never understood what they meant for some reason. Must have the dumb. But seriously ive been painting my stompa with the black, metal, lighter metal in random splotches and it looks awful. I'm gonna have to try that salt bit. Also your damn avatar cracks me up everytime I see it.

Grey_Death has a nice tutorial on it, on the P&M Tutorials' page. I think it's even stickied.

Another alternative to the salt technique is the use of liquid latex/mask. Or simply to sponge the colour.
