Finally got a chance to look through my Storm Raven kit and I am pretty optimistic that I can change up the vertical profile and make it look a little sleeker. I'm not a big fan of how brick-like it is, but it has a lot of potential. Plans:

  • Plate over the front ramp and move the turret down there to mimic, the pilot-gunner positions on modern attack helicopters. This is probably the most aggressive thing I am trying to do and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to attach the turret piece and make it look like an integral part of the gunship. I also read in MajorTom's PM thread that Rhino rear doors are an exact fit for the front ramp, so I'll use one of those to make the front nice and smooth.

  • Once I move the turret to the front, I can use the bottom of the turret as the base for a chin turret. I was looking through my bits and I think the bracket for the Havok Launcher may fit the bill perfectly to allow me to magnetize a cradle for each pair of twin linked weapons.

  • I'm going to magnetize the rotating vents too ... more to make it easier to paint and prime than anything else

  • I'd like to mod the side doors. The way they drop down to be ramps isn't very aerodynamic. I was looking at some pictures of C-130s and how their doors operate and they slide up and around the top of the airframe. I think I can bend some styrene I-beams to make an internal framework that would mimic this.

  • If I can make the doors work, then I plan on building a set of pintel mounted side guns with SM gunners ... just for something different. I can use the hands from the vehicle kits for the gunners hands. Haven't thought through what guns I want to make ... maybe something like a Heavy Stubber that can count-as the Hurricane Bolters.

  • Lastly, the idea of a chapters most venerable warriors/relics swinging on a tiny magnetic clamp seems silly. I'd like to make a cradle for it that actually looks like it can hold a dreadnaught securely during high-G maneuvers.

  • I'll get pics as I make progress. Right now, I'm just trying to think through ideas and get suggestions.

I'm not exactly sure how well it would fit, but if you wanted to keep the top turret so it could rotate but move it down, you might be able to find a way to jimmy the turret pit from a land raider down into the nose. I'm not sure the turret could rotate at that point either though. I'll try to test fit the SR turret into one when I get home.

Actually, the turret piece will be fixed to the front of the Storm Raven, with a chin turret that holds the weapons that would normally sit on the left and right of it.

I thought that was probably what you meant, but figured it was worth mentioning anyway.

Will you be keeping the servitor as the gunner or replacing him with a marine?

I think I'll keep the servitor, though a marine would be cool too.
