If I redo the bases then I'll definitely go the litko route.....unless my evil plan works out .
For right now I'm thinking really basic paint job on the bases will be what happens. Probably mechanicus standard grey all over. I might use some spot color on bases as well like put yellow lines on the runner bases, white one the walkers.

Brief update, don't mind if it auto appends..

Looking at my Smurfs... I can't remember if I had 2 or 4 blocks.. maybe 3. If I have 60 regular smurfs I should be able to spread them out over 5 regiment bases. Actually... I may do some figuring as I'll need some Troop bases (10 models) to sort out legions of smurfs as those are 10 models wide and 6 deep. You can make hordes by combining two regiments but to turn a horde into a legion, you've got to add two troops to the back of a horde. So I need some troops lol.

12 each is a bit low even with larger models, which the smurfs are not, but I plan to bring the head count per regiment to at least 20 with additional smurflings (using the KoW orclings). I don't necessarily want to bogard all of the snotlings for this purpose, and that's why I'll be aiming to put 7-10 per regiment instead of just flooding all available space.

I'll probably use any remaining smurflings to help bulk out scratch built war machine crews, and to add flavor throughout the army. There is no swarm unit in the goblin army like orclings on the orc list.. and I don't necessarily want to ally them in just for that role. I may consider making a swarm or two of smurflings... actually... there's a plan. I can take the orclings and fill out the 100x40mm troop trays that will go on the back of the hordes to make legions. Just pack I dunno 15-20 of them on there as they're so tiny.. but surely 2 for 1 model that would normally be on the base should work. I can use them as throw away goblin rabble troops when I don't want legions, or make two of them into a regiment.

It's sounding like I should be able to field an option of up to 7 regiments, three hordes and a troop, or two legions with a backup regiment. To get upwards of four troops of orclings/smurflilngs I'm probably gonna have to see what Theo has in reserve and what he's looking to trade for some of his, but totally worth it. If I paint a hundred orclings, my painting numbers will skyrocket

I'm also still planning to make one of my giants into Gargamel eventually... several scratch built war machines... I've found my 3 bones fungus men/myconids and while it'll be a bit of a stretch... I think I can base them in a way as to represent trolls. Tough, hitty (spores?), and regenerate all seem to make sense there...

I may scavenge the smurfs off my chariot to try to make a unit or two of sharp sticks somehow, which can imply a horde/legion by being in the front, or not do that by being in the rear If I do that, I'll probably just try to source another large smurf to use as a goblin king (papa smurf) riding the chariot as that's an option and the rabble will need inspiration.

I've been digging out some nicknacks to paint and will get to them as time permits.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hmm actually closer to 90 snotlings, so I could do more like 7 regiments of 12 (with bonus orclings) though that will eat up most/all of my current orcling stock.

Also I have enough for 3 troops of fleabag riders (12, but space them out to take up the space of 5 x3) so I can get troops or a regiment and a troop of those.

I found a bones goblin leader to go in the chariot. He's a bit huge compared to the snotlings but I figure if I give him the same hat and paint his clothes red people will get the idea. Size is usually a quality of leadership in orcs and goblins anyway...

Yeah... I'll wait till I'm further along in the project and actually need them, but I think I'll have to see if Theo's got some spare orclings

I just want to say it’s nice to hear “smurf” used properly, rather then as a derogatory term for Ultramarines.

That smurf got old a long smurfing time ago.

Bwahaha. Right? And without the white caps (and pants), they really don't look much like smurfs anyway.

So I'm gonna take a page from Azazelx's book and count retouched models against my progress total. Below are 13 smurfs (the snotling component of my first rabble regiment and a wiz) and an explorer/scout(rogue) from my bones collection. I like the explorer, he looks ready for action but isn't mid swing in some OTT dynamic pose. While he lacks the social graces of a roguish type, you'll find no one better suited to get your group through a deadly dungeon.

I need to paint up a 100x80 mm regiment base for the smurfs, and then 10 or so orclings to go with it. I'll probably just dip the grots on the base like other bits of scenery.

So I guess 128+14 is 142. Working on it.. I'm gonna drop the photo idea... Too many edits, too little time.

What's the plan for the rogue? Just painting him to paint him, or do you have a game in mind that will use him?

I've got a crapton of Bones adventurers. I think I parsed them out into 4-6 man parties and ended up with seven or eight groups. I've got at least 40 stinking adventurers to paint, so that's a good part of it

I suppose he'll serve as a party rogue if I ever get to play D&D. If I ever get around to making that dungeon scenery like I was talking about, he'll probably feature in that and I'll see about working something out the. Also, probably useful for custom games of Dungeon Saga once that comes in, I believe it has rules for creating your own heroes.

Since those smurfs are curing, I think I'll get to work on their regiment base.

@Archer, haha thanks They amuse me as well. I really want to get them onto regiment bases and paint the unpainted smurfs so I can theoretically play games with them some day.

The little buggers aren't as cheap as they used to be on eBay (or just off the shelf, I mean you got like 20 of them in the blister so even 20 bucks was reasonable) so I'll have to source something else if I ever want to expand.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Bad news sports fans, it looks like i only have 50something orclings. I think I'll just have to reign in my plans for a bajillion regiments of smurfs to something more reasonable. Maybe pack an extra smurf or two onto the bases and spread the orclings out a little further.

Still, will have several blocks and it's not like I don't have a boat load of orcs to ally with the smurfs. The Blue Moon tribe, normal orcs but maybe with some blue war paint.

Had to look up holiday world, looks very similar to six flags here in Missouri. That should have been a great time for her to enjoy. Last time we took my kids I couldn't go on half the rides as I'm too tall and the shoulder restraints couldn't come down far enough, or my legs were too long and the chest bar could t come back and lock in place.

I'm kind of tired of rides myself. I got my wife to go on the baby roller coaster and such.

Holiday world is similar but different. The main cost is the ticket, you get free parking and the access to the water park is also free. They've also got gratis sun tan lotion stations and Pepsi Oasises where you can get Pepsi products as the day is long free of charge. Pretty much all you might pay for is food, a locker at the water park, and souvenirs.

I think today was the busiest I've ever seen the place, but the kiddie rides didn't have much in the way of lines. The lazy river was basically a traffic jam so we chilled in the wave pool instead.

Was a bit tricky leaving as there was a storm warning and the poor kiddo had two leave two separate rides on the way out as the storm/threat level escalated. She had fun overall so we're glad we went.

Hopefully I can manage the kids and house stuff and still get a bit of painting in. Itching to make some more progress. I'm afraid them MM summer sale thing on Tuesday is gonna be a problem so I better make some strides to lessening the pile!

Oh BTW, this week/months book humble bundle is for D&D comics/graphic novels. I think you get 20 or so for 12 bucks. I've already finished the two included Drizzt origin books, almost wanna pick up the third bug I've read the actual book more than twice...

Looking forward to trying the other included series but I'll probably finish my current Garret, PI book just because.

I take it you're a big lad then lol.

After the Alton Towers incident here (4 people seriously injured- 2 amputees) I'm a bit more wary of theme parks.

I think he's got a bit of height on me and I'm a tad over 6 feet.

Finally got to try the basement airbrush setup and I think it works fine. Got my remotes pinned and primed and put an undercoat on four more adventurers so I'd have painting options moving forward.

@AOV, I come in at 6'5", also I'm stuck right at 300lbs to boot, so getting into rides is difficult.

I'm worried about that summer sale too , I'm trying to be good and keep my pennies for Black Plague, but if the Zombicide stuff goes on special I'm screwed.

Glad your painting set up is working for you. Hope to see you hit your stride again.

Are those models mounted on pushpins? That's a nifty way to paint before basing. I will have to give it a try.

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Oh well, maybe they won't put anything we like on sale!

@Josh, yes, regular old push pins. I've got some fancy pins that are a bit longer and narrower which are *meant* for mounting/corkboarding/etc, but obviously I didn't find those in a timely manner. The stouter push pins work better for bones anyway as you can just push them right into the soft material.

The pins holding up the metal infinity parts had to be dremmeled off flat and inserted into a pin vice hole (with glue).

I'm probably gonna put the bones models on to blue tacked gw paint pot lids like usual as the pins are pretty narrow and sort of uncomfortable to hold for long. The infinity pieces, however, will stay as there isn't much else to do that's better. At least not so far as I've found.

The adventurers look really intriguing. What are the things in the left hand corner of the picture (are they legs for one of the infinity remotes)?

I wish I had some remotes. But, your pic is reminding me that I need to bust out my Mag Guard and redo it. I had nearly finished it before I moved, but the move itself got it busted apart and the paint all scratched up. Enough so that I might as well just strup it and start over.
