To me, at least, this seems like the most obvious way of making a 40k game other than a RTS. What do you reckon?

On the PS2, SWB felt massive. Huge battles in space and planetside, it was a truly epic game in my mind. Surely a dark as feth, 40k'd up similar sort of game would be kickin' rad?

Yeah, but balance is always going to be an issue. Are you going to have super-orks to contend with the irreplaceable marines? Have larger numbers? How would combat work or would you chuck it out the window?

I am actually playing the original SWB though at the moment and it is fun. Would love to see it get some 40k attention but it could get very messy.

Getting balance right would be the bigest issue I guess, annd things could indeed get

There would have to be some sort of bot system online to make up the numbers or something.

The reason I mentioned it is I was playing Battlefront the other day with a friend, and we got to thinking how cool it would be to have a 40K version. Particularly the Hoth level, replace the Empire with Orks, AT-AT with gargants, the rebels with Valhallans and Wampa's with dishevelled looking horses and you have a recipe for success!

Agreed. With numbers large enough to make the scale seem grand enough but still small enough that the play can have an impact on the game it would be awesome.

How about a Dogs of War style approach, letting you issue orders to your troops in an almost RTS style before letting you 'possess' a single unit in F/TPS if you need them to not to be cannon fodder AI (the AI in BF is awful).

Of course, space battles would also have to feature heavily, as in SWB II.

You got my hopes up-

Still, sounds like it'd be a cool idea.

There have been attempts a many for a Battlefield 40k mod although it seems none have gotten released.

This style of game seems like it would fit the 40k-verse quite well. Maybe even throw in a bit of a Counter-Strike currency feature for purchasing wargear.

Perhaps to balance the game you would set it as:

you play as either IG vs Orks and the heroes would be the Space marine equivalent. etc etc. simply just balance it out so it would be elder vs dark elder... have their hero's in the codex as well... the hero class in the game.

could work or couldn't i don't really care, its never going to happen.

Why not just balance it by:

Space Marines vs Chaos Space Marines.

Could also "fix" numbers thing by skewing the game more towards a Dynasty Warriors type game.

The shooting of SWB, combined with the melee of DW, would interest me greatly.

I think the classes and award weapons cover it better than the currency system ever did.

It's been a long time since I played CS or a BF game so I don't remember any award/class system, but as you stated whatever it is, it's probably better.

The award system is in BF2. For weapons, once you made x number of kills in a single life, you got an upgraded weapon. You would also gain awards for doing a variety of other things throughout a battle that would give you boni or special equipment. It's gaining things through merit as opposed to the cash system where you can eventually save enough and buy the best stuff(yes, I know you get more cash for kills and winning, but there are ways to play the system).
