I am painting up a single Human Aux as a bit of a trial of my painting skills and am looking for something that is more "cool" than "known Tau Septs" when it comes to colours.
This is the guy here.
So basically he is a pretty simple conversion.
Cadian head w/helmet but doodads and aquilla removed.
Fire Warrior torso, backpack and legs
Catachan Feet
Cadian arms w/lasgun but skull/wings removed and Kroot muzzle replacing Las-muzzle.
Some Resin base with a human skull for the guy to stand on
For some reason I want to paint him Red on Black but I think that is my prefered colour scheme on everything so want to get some of your ideas on what sort of colours would make this guy pop. Other suggestions for what else to add to the base would be appreciated too.

Cheers for that, as for the square base I'm one of the weird group of people who love the 40k universe but don't actually play, so no probs for me.
I just like making pretty man-dollies and since I am a sub par painter I get minis I think look cool and try to paint them and get better.
At most I might use this character if I ever played in a 40k RPG.

So no-one wants to give their $0.2 worth on what colour scheme to paint it?

Well, the Tau are always painted with clean, fairly bright colours, often white, blue, grey, red, etc. So I'd go with one of those when painting his Tau-issued equipment (leg armour, kneepads, boots, backpack, etc).
As for the rest of him, go with something grittier and dirtier. His fatigues, torso armour, shoulderpads and helmet are all Imperial-issue, so paint them accordingly.
Which Regiment does he hail from?
If you can't decide, use shades of brown, khaki, dark green, etc.
Remember, he'll look best with a combination of Tau cleanliness and Imperial grittiness. These two different aspects of his appearance have to contrast.

I prefer Camo and natural colors for my tau with a bit of clean lines on equipment and such
for example
although my Gue'vesa are becoming fully integrated into the Unified Corp TO&E
Basicaly think of the enviroment your little "Man-dollie" hails from and paint accordingly.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestions, I really like the ideas of the darker fatigues and the brighter armour pieces. I am not sure about the camo, simply coz he is on a slate base but I can see what I can do with the base before writing it off.
Will give you guys a pic once it gets done. Now to think of what else t put on the base.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting
Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

Maybe you should paint him in dark but warm colours... Like browns and reds.
