As in, once I build them up to 1500pts or whatever, will I still be using what I've gotten in AOBR, or will I have discarded them as bad?

Klawboss - Allways nice as it gives you S10 klaw attacks.
Allways keep it.
Nobz - As basic they arent much, you may want to kit them out a bit better once you have spare parts (big choppas and klaws, or even a pain boy)
20 boyz - Allways need more.
The main problem is the big shootas, which have no real use.
Might be bale to convert them though.
anyway, you need 80 boyz minimum
Koptas - Allways nice for the movement and TL rokkitz.
However, you might be able to grab some spare parts and give one a buzzsaw for quick tank hunting.
All in all, its a nice set.
However, i would get that and then pack out on boyz too.

Yeah, it seems like converting AOBR models is difficult or impossible. I have some of the "snap on" marines, and I don't see how I could give them a different weapon.
Is it even possible to do this?

The standard boyz are easily converted if you're willing to chop off the arm that's molded to the body. Doing that more or less make it into a generic Ork body, for which then other pieces can be latched onto. The Big shoota body, though, is probably only good for modelling heavy weapons (like Rokkits and the likes) as the front of the body has a gaping hole, which is one of the two places the shoota slots in.
The Deffkoptas are often used as the basis of Warbiker or Nob Biker conversions too, and you just need to carve out a place for wheels.

It's a solid set. Matt's large Ork army has 2 or three full sets of AoBR stuff in it I think.

My Ork Army actually contains 120 AoBR Boyz and at least 2 of everything else.

Thanks guys.
Jake--Once this campaign's over I'll have to talk to Matt about going against his Orks. I want to see how they play.

Definitely a solid buy. I've got two full AoBR sets, minus the second set of koptas. For the price, you can't beat it when it comes to collecting your all-important hoard o' boys and the other models are great for parts and/or bases for conversions, if you don't use them, outright. Yeah, the solid cast/snap-on poses can get a tad stale and make conversion mildly more labor intensive, if not more difficult, but it's still very doable.

The Big Shootas are easily convertable into Shoota Boyz (cut the barrel down) or the staple of a good ork army, Lootas (extend the barrel, add on other weapon bits, etc).
I have 15 AoBR big shoota boyz converted to Lootas by adding Louders to the big shootas (opposite of silencers).

Greetings.
I've cut the arms from the shoulders of my nobs from AoBR and magnetized them so that I can add different weapon configurations (and arms) depending on how I'm equipping them. Boyz have already been explained. The big shootas are useful no matter what. Either you're going to be using mobs on foot and wanting the big shootas, or you're going to be running mechanized orks, very likely with Loota support - and a Big Shoota is about 2 bits away from a conversion into a Loota.
Pictures abound in my gallery and elsewhere.
