I've read tons about how Deff Dreads pale in comparison to the Kan.
The stats generally seem to reflect this attitude.
Do any of you prefer the Dread and if so, why?

I like to run them both. In a footslogging kan wall, I find that 4 30man boyz squads is plenty with KFF big meks. Then I can take 2-3 kan squads and 1-2 Deff dreads as troops via the big meks. Give em skorchas run em in front of you boyz to give you opponent other big targets. I get good use out of deff dreads, I think they are quite good. But it is quite easy to get both into a kan wall list with a big mek or 2.
YMMV

It depends on how you load the rest of the army up. Its cheaper then youd think. Ive run a similar build a few times. 9 kans with 2 dreds, 2 bigmeks and a couple blobs of boys. Basically you just keep everything behind the kans to get some nice 4+ cover, make sure you have both bigmeks positioned so they cover the kans well enough and you have a damn near unbreakable wall heading to the enemy. I mainly use the kans to soak up shots and to shoot back, then when your close enough, I let the dreds loose and charge with both Kans/Dreds. Its fantastic.

The problem with the Dred, is only numbers. You can take 9 kans! You can only take 5 dreds and thats if you use the BigMek thing. Not to mention kans are a squadron and can use the KFF bubble/cover the army better then the dreds. Dreds are dead killy if you can get them to the enemy. It doesnt really matter too much what it is, because dreds just chew up most things. Obviously sending them after terminators and the like isnt a smart move. But vehicles/troops can kiss their asses goodbye. I shut up a gloating necron player with my dreds. "oh you cant kill a monolith!" BS I cant. First time the dred assaulted that lith was toast

Your necron player was way too cocky.

Most Necron players (and I'm one) have a haunted, nervous expression, and count their models obsessively over and over as they keep track of Phase Out..

Monoliths are tough, but not THAT tough..

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

I'll only take a dread if I have a big mek to make it count as troops, otherwise it's all 9 of my cans for the low, low price of 400 points in total! Whoot!
