What would this hypothetical game be like? Total War, but on a galactic scale?

Hi Lord Castellan - yes I was thinking along those lines.
In order for a galactic display to work, I think a gaming platform similar to what was used for Star Wars Supremacy/Civilization should be considered.
There would not be hundreds of thousands of planets, but there would be enough to ensure that the gamer(s) of all varing levels/competencies are kept challenged. The planets available/drafted in, would be those scripted in the 40K universe storyline.
Mix that up with a 'Total war' game engine - we would all be able to see and experience those epic battles that many gamers are still waiting for.
Playable factions would be Orcs, Eldar and the Imperial Guard*
Non-playable factions would be Chaos, Necrons and theTAU.
*Space Marines included as a fighting force with Imperial Guard
Do you think it would be workable?

Totally depends on what races are in the start. I mean; I want to see less popular races into the Computer Games so we can see more players playing these factions. For all the hate people gave Soulstorm; it was one of the reasons why Dark Eldar got more players.
I'd like a turn based game with: Space Marines, Witchhunters, Chaos Renegades and Eldar. Orks and IG in the first expansion. Tau and Necrons in the next.

Thats not a bad idea Mr Hyena. The project I had in mind would be quite dark, gritty and give the gameplayer that suspense/edge like Doom3 did for some of us.
Dark Scipio I am a Civ fan myself -and a 40K version would be great. Regrettably I dont think we will see it though.
I hear what you say Vandil and I will check out Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate. My fear is though that the game you mentioned along with Warhammer Retribution and Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War....well none of these deliver the epic 'total war' battles that I would expect for 40K. Generally, I havent seen the battles I want to see - forget squad level capacity gaming- we see it a hundred times over in other games. Perhaps we are all to keen to adopt gameplay at this level and not rise above the challenge of Red Alert and that calibre. Perhaps we wont see the type of gaming I speak of for a while. Maybe I should just sit back, accept this fact and and rely on TV/Movies who use that 'massive software' to generate alll the 'big' battles for me.

As far as I could tell it was based off this games engine. Soldiers at War

I still have the disc somewhere, classic turn based war gaming, had a very Xcom micro management feel to it wish they'd do another but SSI is long long dead.

I would love to see the Total War Team at Sega do a Warhammer Fantasy Game. In fact when explaining Warhammer to friends and people, I will say 40k is like Dawn of War/Starcraft where Fantasy is like the battles in the Total War games.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I remember Star Wars: Galaxy at War (I think)
Where the overall game was a tactical overlay of the galaxy where you fought, and then you could take it down to the planet level for fleet combat in orbit, or down to the ground for ground combat. IE, fight through an enemy fleet, land on the planet to defeat the ground forces - complete invasion kind of thing.
Was hell of a lot of fun. 40k should be like that in a video game.

Empire at War.
I agree with this.
Though i would prefer the fleet based combat to be more like Sins of a Solar Empire and the ground combat to be like Dawn of War 2.
If it had to be turn based...
A modification of Empire at War would be perfect.

Yeah I thought about them too - I have alot of 40K material at my disposal but hit some obstacles.
One of the major problems is finding out what actual facilities you can build for each race.

I would give both my jewels for a Chaos Gate 2.0... God that game was such a time-sink. *nostalgia sigh*
Altough I doubt THQ would ever get more than one 40K strategy game going, what with Space Marine (hopefully) almost done and the estimated price tag on production of DMO being about $50 million.

A Warhammer 40K 'Battlefront skin' would be pretty cool I must admit.
Only, I am designing a 40K Total War strategy (turn-based) game but allowing for real-time 3d battles in campaign and custom battle mode.

So you're designing a mod for the "Total War" series? Count my vote for that As for your problem with buildings/facilities, just borrow the building lists from DoW + Expansions, and get creative with the remainder.

I always hoped for turn based super high graphics same probability 40k video game where you make your army list and then the game (I lost it) makes sure you do everything in order and you wouldnt have to remember special rules coz they would just be buttons on units and stuff like that. Pretty much a video game that plays EXACTLY like tabletop.
GW will NEVER allow ANYONE to make a game like that.

Seconding (or thirding or fourthing) Chaos Gate, what a blast that was.
So 90s it hurt. But before Dawn of War it was likely the most successful GW computer adaptation (then again the competition was fantasy's Shadow of the Horned Rat *yuck*).

I would love to see a 40k Total war game. I belive its been done for Warhammer Fantasy, Lord Of The Rings, Starwars and WWI.
Mix this up and you have the basics of a 40k game (sans Titans that'll be tricky as well as air combat).
