ssshhhhh! Its a secret!

I think that you need to make them more yellow. From a distance they looked almost green, but apart from that they are some good looking models.

when life gives you lemons, make hot sauce, then sit back and watch the world figure out how you did it.

I like the faded yellow. Also, always been a fan of the Red Aquila. Oo, that sounds like a new Chapter.

I say good job, especially since yellow can be quite a whimsical color to mess with.

"Red Aquilas" I could dig on it.

Very nice looking army... I always love seeing good Imperial fist army painted up. They always look so distinctive.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Certainly interesting. And I am not sure if it is the light or what, but I have to agree they look almost lime green in some of the pictures

I`m not entirely sure what it is you are washing these guys with (army painter varnish?) but I think you might want to adjust the shade you are using as it doesn`t seem to gel with the yellow you are using particularly well.

I don't know if it is that or the yellow, but your LR looks quite streaky.

However, they do look pretty good overall.

Good work. I like the faded yellow. It gives the marines a battle-scarred look. I have to ask, however: are SMs even allowed to have Baneblades in the fluff?

Sons of Dorn stand fast!

I'm loving the force you've assembled here and the red trim against the yellow is tight. To me the yellow doesn't look green (that might be a monitor thing) but it does look dirty - not that that's a bad thing at all! I'd be inclined to clean up the flat plates, but that's just me.

Awesome Lysander, too. I'll be making a counts as Lysander for my own Crimson Fists army this weekend.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Thanks, they're meant to look dirty/grungy actually, I wanted them to have a feel of they've been fighting for a while. I still like a nice pristine looking marine though, like they just suited up and are getting ready for a drop.

Not in the fluff, but you can pretty much do what you want in Apocalypse. If you want to see some really cool space marine baneblades, you should check out this thread, (you too Sugar_Woof, it is the one I was telling you about a few months ago):

Where are all the troops?

What's with the IG tank?

It's yellow over black isn't it? That's why they look off I think.

As I stated in the op, this is all I have painted so far. I've gotten as far as priming the troops, that's all.

It's a Stormlord painted in homage to the Imperial Fists, that's why I posted it.

They're not off, Imperial Fists are either yellow with black trim or yellow with red trim. I actually see more people use red trim, even a lot of GW's Imperial Fists have red trim. Some even use white, it all looks good.

Yellow just looks washed out due to over exposure is all. I imagine it's a lot more yellow face to face. Yellow is insanely annoying to paint! Congrats on your patience! A very nice cohesive scheme.

That said, there's a wee bit of blotchyness on some of the minis, most apparent on the close up Dev with ML.

For the next unit, consider the following:

1. There's very little use of black lining, and a lot of the recesses in armour have been painted in yellow. I would probably say that the black undercoat isn't being utilised fully. If you want to use black, let it work for you, leave some recesses black, otherwise give yourself a fighting chance with yellow and undercoat white.

2. Patchiness. Beat patches with several thin coats. Build up a solid layer.

3 Yellow. Yellow really pops when the final shade is laid on a graduation of darker to lighter hues. Base with a foundation, or start with a brown, then apply a midcoat of your final yellow and a touch of the base brown. Finish with the final yellow on top of that.

Yellow really needs time and care to really pop. Try the above on a test mini and see if floats your boat. It takes longer, but the finish is good.

The photo below is from a WIP in another thread. It's now finished and hasn't been uploaded, but you get the gist.

Finally for comparison an example of how exposure affects yellow. The above picture is closest to true life colours, below is a picture that suffers from washout.

The yellow looks like you went suburst and then put a quickshade or wash on it that turned it the greenish color. I did it once and it is a great way to paint nurgle marines haha. Needless to say those guys were converted after that screw up.

Very interesting comparison! Awesome to see those side by side, good info. Sorry if my post was terse. I didn't mean black AND yellow, I meant black painted OVER yellow.

I'm not a fan of the Iyanden Darksun over black look. Not vibrant enough.
