Im sitting here looking at my old 4th edition Marines and wondering what to do with them. With a little work I think I could update them to a 5th edition legal army. Im just not sure if I want to do the work for it. Plus I am much more interested in a Chaos Army I have in the works right now.
What do you guys and gals do with your old out of date armys?

Here is a link to the WIP pics from forever ago..

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

A single edition isn't exactly a huge hurdle. Especially with Generic Marines.

Just rewrite your list and you probably won't need to actually change any of the models at all.

But it is a prob. My Termie squad has 2 assault cannons(now illegal) my Termy honorguard for my librarian has 2 assault cannons(now illegal), My Troops squads are 2 8 men groups one with a missle launcher and 1 with ccws and a scout squad.
Fast has 8 man assault squad with 2 plasma pistols and a vet sarge with lighting claws(can you still do that? I will have to look).
Mostly I would have to convert some new guys to match the look I have going on and Im not sure if I have the will to do that.
Lucky for me though, I always tend to buy more than I need to do conversion work so I know I have the resin bases and some of the needed bits to do the job.
Im just trying to decide if I want to do the work or mabye sell them lot to someone else(including the bits) So they might get some enjoyment out of it. Better that than sitting in my closet for another 6 years.

It sounds like you just ned a dozen guys or so. Get some Black Reach Terminators to fill in those squads, and like 4 Black Reach Marines to fill in the tactical squads. You can bring your army up to snuff for like $20 on eBay, no problemo.

Honestly?

Keep them, and if the mood serves you later, update them. If you arn't really feeling keeping up with them, just put them away and try a new army for a while.

Basic thing I did was a HQ and 2 squads. Then if I like them, a little more here and there after a while, you have another army on your hands.

I wouldn't nessesarily get rid of them, until you really have no honest love for them anymore. Then its away they go, because depending on your price, someone will always buy them.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I did a quick build with army builder. To bring this army up to correct numbers to use assorted upgrades and keep using as many of these existing minis as possible makes the army hit 2219 points. and that was with keeping the speeders with HB and AC. Dreads extra armor and so on.
Whoopsy.. forgot I added a Land raider to that list(I have one in another box almost finished converting), so yank off 250 points. Cant realy have a Termi libby walking around the board can we.. hahaha

Nice conversions.

After all the work you've put into them I'd keep them if I were you.

I still use the same marines I've had since RT.

Marines with bolters are still marines with bolters.
Heavy plasma gun heavies are now "plasma cannons".

If I had a squad with too many specials/heavies, I added sufficient models to make it legal. Generally gave me full squad sized units then.

I had terminators with three assault cannons, a heavy flamer and cyclones (2). All in 15 terminators. I added more termies to round them out.

4th to current is not that much of a major change.
It's more of a hassle to make an RT army current, but then it's also not an insurmountable. Much of it will have a current version/listing.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

My advice in this situation is always:

As long as the army is painted, keep the army even if you don't use it. Pack it up in a box and save it for later.

Because you get so little $$$ return on the time investment you put into painting and modeling them. And chances are in the future you'll get the 'bug' to play with a marine army again and now you'll have a LOT less work to get the army playable again as opposed to starting completely over from scratch.

So I vote to keep the army if its painted. And even if it isn't painted, looking at the amount of energy you put into converting those models I would still vote to keep it, because (again) you're not going to get worthy monetary compensation for the amount of time you put into those conversions.

I hate to say it (I’d rather you gave them to me) but there is defiantly a good starting point and looks like a lot of work went into them.
Shouldn’t take much at all to get that army back on the table….

Its not so much the effort to put it back on the table as the will to do the work. Part of me says Shelve it untill you get the bug to redo it(hell mabye next edition Termis can take 2 assault cannons agin) but the flip side of that is I wouldnt mind of someone else got to enjoy it. I could sell it and make a slight profit(if I could get 500 or more for it), I was working at GW at the time I built it and I got all the minis with my (MASSIVELY UBAR) employee discount.

I would try to redo it, or sell it on ebay. That way, you could get money for your chaos and more space to put them.

I'd say keep it. That's a very nice dynamic army and Marines are, to me, like the 'stand-by' army. It's cool you could make some profit if you chose to sell them. If you do choose to sell them, after a few updates, they stand out enough and I'm sure you'll get what you want for them, but I think you may regret it when the next Codex comes out and Tactical Squads cost £30+ each

I think you will be lucky to get more than 30% of retail if you sell the army secondhand, so I would box them up and keep them for a time when you get tired of Chaos.

I'd keep them as a "just in case I need them one day" army, alternatively you can rewrite a smaller list and let opponents or people just starting out in the hobby use them for pickup games against you while they learn the rules, buid their own army etc?

This.

Even if you bought the models heavily discounted (or got them free as presents, for that matter) and wouldn't need a high selling price to realize a profit, that's still not worth it, IMO.

You need to think more about the replacement cost, in time and work, to make a new SM army when you eventually get the bug again. As Brother SRM said, it's cheap and easy to update this army. If you get rid of it and wind up buying another one in a year or two, it will NOT be cheap, and it will be a lot more work starting building and painting from scratch.

Like I did with my RT Marines, conversion always works best for me as it is cheaper and fun. Just break em down and add spiky bits and updates for your blooming Chaos army. I just love conversion, mutated marines are just what Khorne asked for.....

Thanks guys. I guess I will just shelve them for now. It looks like the only way right now to recycle this army is to use the SW codex. So back in the closet they go.

Ohh btw, thanks for the comments about the army itself. I worked pretty hard on it. Still a few flaws I have found that need addressing(couple mold lines, pilot for a speeder, wrong chest plate for an assault marine, that kind of stuff).

Well when I go to put them back in the closet I will wear my suit of armor and sheild and weild my crozius, so I will "DEFIANTLY" put them away aginst all who would oppose me.
