Does anyone know where to get heads for guardsmen with berets? They are needed for a project involving my IG so I need a large quantity and preferably a reasonable price.

From what I've seen they are kinda rare like the beak marine helmet. They are $6.99 each from what I see at The Warstore. http://www.thewarstore.com/product47361.html

That's expensive for one head! Plus there's postage and, this being IG, I'll need loads. There's also the problem that they'll all look the same.

There are a fair few about, these guys are 5.65euro for 10, so thats a bit better..!

There is another place, but I can't remember where, I will have a dig!

3.69euro for 5.. so I guess that maxmini has it on price!

Well then you are in luck! Berets are very simple to sculpt, laughably so, in fact. I would go so far to say that IG berets are probably one of the best starting sculpts to do, for those with little experience.

Here is the simple breakdown that I have used:

Use IG Catachan heads, plastic preferably. Cut off the top of their heads and/or trim away their hair/bandannas to where the brim of the beret will be and so that their heads will conform to the beret. Leave a small lip from their bandannas as a guide and as the "curl" of the edge of the beret.

Next, use Green Stuff to form a pointed "dunce" cap atop the head, leaning to the opposite side you want your beret, make enough length to stretch over to the other side.

Trim or shape the point into a semi-circle and then fold over.

Use a craft razor to adjust the beret as necessary, be sure to smooth the Green Stuff with the razor after a few minutes of hardening. You may have to practice this many times before you get good berets, but if you are doing a lot of them, then you will be able to stand a handful of less convincing berets (which is reasonable, you see a lot of bad berets in the military).

But if you want to spend money for a ton of heads that look the same.....

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

OK, but would it work with Cadian models?

The head should fit the body, yes. I have a whole squad of Catachan headed Cadian torsos and they look great. You will have to shave their necks down a little, but if you have patience and take your time to figure out what works, it will be easy enough to produce a whole army of these guys in relatively little time.

As with anything in P&M, patience and practice is what really pays off in the end.

The other problem is that I have about five Catachan heads from tanks etc...

@ CommissarCandlestick : That would be a problem, but you probably will not have trouble finding Catachan heads from other players or cheap online (ebay or bitz retailers). Cadian Screaming Sergeants should also work.

@ TheGiantPeanut : Are they proper scale? I have seen these before, but only the advertisements and not on model. Straight 28mm scale is very different from 40k "28mm hero" scale, so "normal" sized heads may look funny on Cadians. Just a thought.

I have seen them on imperial guard models before, looked epic, no problems with scale. If I would say anything though...perhaps slightly smaller than standard heads but they looked awsome

If you care Shadowforge makes a "Sci-fi female" upgrade kit for cadians that includes several female heads with berets (as well as ones with various other softcaps, one with goggle, several bare heads and some that mate with the empty cadian helmets). They are the right scale and have reasonable proportions, when used with the cadian bits they add some subtle variety without the "OMG BEWBS!" issues.

http://www.shadowforge.com.au/monk/index.html At the bottom.

I've got a couple of mine mostly assembled and painted if you want pictures of how they look with arms and legs. My army has waist pouches on the fron as standard gear that takes a little away from the slimmer waists, but you can still see what I mean about them looking female without looking like porn stars. Considering Shadowforge's other products I was actually rather impressed with how tasteful these come out.

Greenstuff em bro, really not that hard to do. I was like you, and I had never used greenstuff before in my life but they were actually really easy to make.
