Brain being fried at lack of sleep = must start thread on Dakka!
I have started an Imperial Guard army after lucking into a deal locally that included a sh-load of tanks and hellhounds.
Not the WORST reason to start Guard, I guess.
Right now, the motor pool includes..
2 Hellhounds
5 Leman Russ Chassis with 8 swappable Turrets
3 Chimera
I went the cheap troop route and was able to get hold of a bunch of the WGF Shock Troops, .. enough to make all the infantry I think I will need. Cadian armsets with lasguns, etc..
1-2 units of Stormtroopers
3 Veteran squads
1 blob squad - 2 HW detachments, 3 basic guardsmen, 1 pcs.
1 Company CS.
So, being that I have essentially greatcoat guard... and tanks.. I do NOT want to go down the "krieg klone" route.
Basic color scheme -
Infantry - camo brown coats, the "helgast" style heads for non-elite troops (red helmets), the "darth vader" helms for stormies and CCS (black helmets). Red shoulderpads and body armor. Black weapons.
Tanks - camo green, black weaponry, Boltgun metal accents. no camophlage scheme on the tanks.. flat color panels.
So.. having read all that.. I am now stuck on what to CALL these guys.
I was kinda inspired by "15 hours" .. the basic troopers have NO extraneous equipment on them, but the Vets have backpacks and the stormtroopers have grenades and packs and extra lasgun clips. Why give the grunts stuff when they might die? Save the equipment for those who live longest.
So, no gasmask heads, no rebreathers.. but techno facemasks.. implies hostile environment.. as well as the tank enclosed nature of the vehicles, and flame based weaponry.
I need to come up with a Planet Name, regimental founding (fairly confident I will call em the 13th or the 42nd), and maybe a cool nickname.
Any suggestions? Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and yes, within 24 hours I should have a picture or 2 of the basic infantry scheme up..

Maybe a lucky company? 7th Vosotran? With your platoons having lucky symbols like rabbits foot platoon, or clovers?
It's the opposite of mine (unluck symbols), so, what the heck.

Given my dice rolling is almost on a par with Dashofpepper's (but I will let him be the all-time "winner" of that trophy) .. the 13th is more in line with what I envision.
My SM army is the Omega Marines... taken in fluff from Robt Asprin's Phule's Company series.. the worst of the worst!
So far, I have fielded this company unpainted one time.. and, was tabled. The Revenants was suggested at that time.. "Kill us and we will keep coming back!"

Well if you want to form a Regiment, first try planet that you like the most. Or, even better, form a Regiment from a planet whose troops are experts in a some way of fighting tactics.
Since you have chosen more armor than troops, I would suggest Armageddon, or any forge world you can imagine. And may I suggest for your Regiment to be much more cooler to come up with battle cry for them. Like something what Armageddonians have: "Man of Armageddon, this is our time!!!".
Good luck

I am thinking of making this regiment from no well known planet.. homebrew all the way. Maybe minor noted.. one line in a book someplace.
The Revenants and the battle cry was more of a tongue in cheek moment.. I lost, but since the little plastic men will fight again someday, it is kinda like them coming back from the dead.
I like the 1313 from earlier, double the lousy luck.. maybe commanded by Colonel Misyrae

bless the internet!
That was a fun read.. pity... nothing struck me. SOME things seemed likely... I might name a Chimera the Groat Wait Twit but .. Automatically Appended Next Post: I did see on Lexicanum that one of the existing regiments mentioned in IA is..
The Valstadt 13th Armored Regiment
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Valstadt_13th_Armoured_Regiment
but there is NOTHING to show what they look like.. which is PERFECT for me..
So, what is an Armored Regiment vs say Mechanized Regiment or Heavy Brigade vs regular..
I assume it has something to do with what units are in the force.. but.. not sure if there is a 'manual' of sorts to make a distinction

Armored Regiment focus on Tanks. Mechanized has Mechanized Infantry(most, if not all Guardsmen have a Chimera transport), Heavy Brigades Focus on heavy weapons ie, the Hydra.

So, with 3 vet squads in chimera and 1 stormtrooper squad in a future valkyrie, does that balance the amount of tank goodies?
I don't seem to be either way predominantly..
is there a hybrid term?

well here's a few off the top of my head...
Armored Inf = mostly mech inf with tank support
ACR (Armored Cavalry Regiment ) = a combined arms with air/ armor and inf support
RCT (Regimental Combat Team ) = Same as above but with a very flexible force structure
HMB ( Heavy manuver Brigade ) = a heavy armor force with inf, and engineer support.
AAR ( armored airmobile regiment ) a former soviet formation that had light tanks and other armored air dropable units mixed in with airborne/air mobile inf.
of course there is the good old..
Panzer regiment = tanks of course
Panzergrenadier = Mech inf with armor support.
Guards armor/inf/airmobile/airborne/mech regiment
Shock armor regiment = a heavily armored and reinforced formation with everything and the kitchen sink for support.
thats all I can come up with right now for some of the more unique formation names, but i will keep thinking on it.

Call it a task force or something like that. Valstadt 13 Armored Regiment, Colonel Misery's Task Force... gives you room to add in whatever you want later if you get another good deal.

What's in a name? *shrug*
Ok, so you want to run a sort of mechanized formation. So, you can use any of the designations that Soo'Va'Chaa gives (though I think he's making too big a deal about differences). Or, you can harken back to the Old Days, and take some names from European units. Namely, Dragoons, Hussars, Lancers, etc.
All in all, though, most armored units will have organic mechanized (or motorized) infantry.
As for a number, do you have a favorite number? Do you have a battle you want to hearken to? My Armored Company, for example, is from the 39th (one of my football numbers) Prokhorovkian Armor. Though, I may change the designation....Guards Prokhorovkian Armor, perhaps? Or go with the "Shock" designation? *shrug*

The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

Played a 500 point patrol mission tonight (1 troop, no HQ requirement).. took a PCS, 2 10 man squads, a Chimera and 2 bare Leman Russes
Beat a SM player fielding 2 units of scouts, and 2 dev squads with lascannon and HB..
Did end up caling them the Valdstadt 1313th.. little hard on the tongue with the dual 13, on that..
