So, as per established fluff, the Grey Knights number around 3k, give or take. However, on GW's web page, they're described as only being a thousand strong. Is there any mentioning of this retcon in the Codex fluff (as I haven't seen a physical Codex myself, I have to ask), or is it just some web minion that failed?

Perhaps it means that at any one time there are about 1,000 actually ready to fight, and 2,000 in training, hospital, maintenance or transit.
They have to cover a whole galaxy after all, and fight the toughest enemies.

Could be that there's 1000 on Titan and the other 2000 are at the various GK/Ordo Malleus stations around the galaxy as fast response forces.

It has been on lexicanum for ages. And I always remembered the GK to be around 3000. Even in GW publications.
I guess they got "downgraded" with the last codex.
You know, budget cuts, financial crisis, etc, and you end up with 2000 unemployed GK!

Looking at the final codex, I say some reference to there being only a thousand Grey Knights. Let me see if I can find the page.
But yeah, it seems Ward retconned them to be standard chapter size, with 100 Marine strong "Brotherhoods" led by a Brother-Captain.
EDIT: Can't find the page number for the 1000 strong, but it looks like 10 Brotherhoods of 100 Battle Brothers, plus the Purifier Order, the Paladins, Apothecaries, Grand Masters, and a ton of support personnel.

Maybe it's 1000 marines but the additional mentioned above ("Purifier Order, the Paladins, Apothecaries, Grand Masters, and a ton of support personnel") pushthat number up to 3000.

Unlikely. All these extra troops are either specialized or elite troops, and are thus fewer in number than the "standard" marines.

I'm not sure it was retcon as much as it was just simply not realizing that there was an established number. Ward didn't really so much change the number as he did just not read any of the old fluff on the Grey Knights.

Yep. It's the old GW policey: "No editors! Not now! Not ever!". They should just get a bunch of nerds from the internet like us to read stuff over beforehand. We'd point out all the inconsistances immediately.

I know this is unlikely to be a popular answer, but none of the actual numbers in 40k make sense. They are just there for the look of the thing. So the Grey Knights are formed of exactly how many supermen you'd think they would need.

+1 I would even do that for free. I mean reading all BL novels before their release date? It sounds like a plan. Well, to be fair, I would definitely charge my checking of Goto's writings.

lexicanum article doesn't provide a source for this 3,000 strong.. and I don't recall any (modern anyway) era publication stating that, does anyone have an idea where this number is from or is it just (another) example of fanboyism of behalf of someone editing that page.
The April WD states that the Gks are divided into 8 Brotherhoods, each roughly equal to a space marine company.
Given that it is merely the "bulk" of the chapter formed into these companies when one adds in those outside of this set up about 1000 sounds about right.

I think the 3000 number comes from the BL books(not sure, haven't read them, also never saw that amount till this thread), so it being canon is debatable.

The Exorcists, but they are only a few hundred strong supposedly. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh actually, They deployed 12 companies to Armaggedon and also 10 to Cadia! That's 22 Compaines! That's more companies than the GKs have!

Are they listed as a successor chapter in the new codex ? previously they were more the Inquisition dirty little secret attempt to have a similar force that they could control.
