The new army O and G book confused me as now they are always fast cav.

Yeah, I really like that the giant spider and giant wolf grant fast cav status to their riders, so you can have fast cav heroes. Way cool...

If the hero doesn't have the "fast cav" rule when he goes in the unit, the unit loses the ability to act as fast-cav.
I don't know if by virtue of being on a wolf, or spider, that it grans the special rule to the character.

Take a look at the new Orc book. It appears to do exactly that.

Also, the BRB FAQ specifies that if the mount has Fast Cav the whole model has it now. I don't know if that covers Orks and company, but it does for say WoC Slaanesh Lords on Steeds of S.
