Yes, I know they get hated on - but it was a joy to see the Pride my 8-year old son took in placing his Ultramarines in the display case at school today. He took careful notice of where Marneus Calgar was in relation to his fellow terminators, made sure he was surrounded by Thunder Hammer / Stormshields + wanted to put Captain Cato Sicarius on the lower level near the drop pod and the Tactical Marines. Last year when they were displayed he said everyone thought they were the coolest 'legos' ever! HaHA!

A small picture of him ended up in the latest GW Email - Newsletter (as he finished 2nd place in the costume contest Games Day 2010) with this costume:

And now he says, "I'm on my way to being famous!"

Needles to say, he's already super excited and looking forward to Games Day in Chicago!

Just feeling proud and wanted to share!

Well done to him, glad to see youngsters taking such a big fascination to the hobby. You should be proud.

Love the smurf outfit, too =P

He needs to look fiercer; there is far too little hatred of xenos in those eyes.

He looks like a cool little dude, if his report card is half as impressive as his Ultramarine force then you have every right to be one proud parent.

I agree, it's vital to hook them when they are young.

I thought about trying to start an after-school gaming club.. not sure what goes into it and I'm not always in town - but I think that's how kids get started in the UK ?

WOW, that's a fantastic army he's got there, and bigger than mine too. Congrats on having an awesome son, sadly i have two daughters and neither one of them even gives my minis a second glance. Really though, it's nice to see someone that young picking up the hobby, but even nicer still is seeing such a proud pappa.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

Best moment there was when the lifesize Ultramarine gave Scout Zachary a fist bump. BOOM. Great moment that I wish I would have caught on film.

I'm sure GW feels exactly the same. Hah.

But seriously OP, your son is awesome. I wish I had gotten into 40K when I was his age, I might actually have been good at it by now.
I vote you help him make a working chainsword for his next costume.

He laid down the Ultramarine Blue Basecoat - painted the weapons and tank treads boltgun metal - Aquillas, TH/SS and LCs got gold.
I touched up areas he went 'outside of the lines' and did the heads of the terminators in white - be he did all the basing (black, grey sand with 'ultramarine aquarium rocks').

From a distance and on the table top - not bad looking at all. After playing a quick demo game at GW - he's into the High Elves now.. those will definitely pose a bigger challenge to paint, but he loves hurling fireballs at my dwarfs and 'always going first' in CC.

A working chainsword would be sweet - my fiance and I are trying to brainstorm ideas on how to step up his costume a bit, but it's so simple and effective and gives him the freedom of movement he needs to still enjoy events.

When he was six he walked into a GW and asked, what is all this stuff? I had totally forgotten about Games Workshop and after a quick trip to my parent's basement.. A bunch of mid 90s Eldar, Marines and Orks surfaced and it brought him into the hobby and me back in it after a little over 10 years.

Great to see a young soul into the hobby.

We're definitely going to be at Games Day - and yes, some people saw him walking around at GD10 in Baltimore, but for the Costume Contest (because of his height) many people past the few first rows of the crowd actually got to see his costume at Judging time. (If anyone from GW is out there - you probably should have used the stage which was right behind the contestants.)

So yes.. being eight years old - Land Raiders and Terminators (And of course (insert booming echoing voice here) Marneus Augustus Calgar are his favorites!

Excellent display - you've got a lot to be proud of there - I'll say here that when one works with their hands like that when they're young, it makes for so much more patience and focus moving forward and getting older. Awesome stuff, thanks for sharing this!

He likes to run three Land Raiders - and since he likes Terminators so much and goes Terminator heavy (with Calgar), It's a fun game every time.. albeit a gross misappropriation of points. So I usually play really fluffy lists against him with a little bit of punch to make it a fight.

Ork Boy Hangin' off a Trukk

Grats on having an awesome life + amazing child.

Going to go commit suicide now.

He's a cool dude. You're a cool dude.

How did the Ork respond to your man? Or was the picture his expression? His expression of abject horror as the little drummer boy -- er -- little ultrascout came barreling down on him with unrestrained fury? His complete horror that his life was fading from him in the blink of an eye. That his entire grasp of Ork Kultur was destroyed in a single second. In that single second of irony that He, the Ork, should die by the hands of someone smaller than He. If only the Ork could comprehend it. Alas. He is an Ork. He died thinking he fought tooth and nail against a Dreadnought, when in fact, it was merely the awesomeness of your son shining through.

I guess what I'm saying is... I can't sleep.

These are the tales of the Skeleton Warriors....
