i relaise this has been debated a lot but i can never seem to find a "definitive" answer.
What is the scale equivilent to 40k. the general opinion seems to be anything from 1/32 to 1/45.

Really? If you just compare a lot of buildings to the models you realize there is no scale. But if you only consider the models on their own it should be possible to make a scale.

Yeah the scale's definitely not consistent.
A SM rhino is meant to hold, what is it, 10 marines? Yet I can barely fit 3 models in one.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor. |

There is not "definitive" answer, but I can try to give you a fairly complete answer.
Measuring off of my standard plastic Cadian guardsman, Warhammer 40k figures, are around 30mm scale meaning when standing strait they are 30mm from sole to eye. Most older metal 40k figures are 28mm, but the scale has crept since then. 30mm translates to 1/54 which is not to be confused with 54mm which is much bigger. http://theminiaturespage.com/ref/scales.html
However, they are also quite "heroic", which is a nice way of saying husky or chunky. Or to put another way, they will always be out of scale because their proportions will NEVER match up with a real human. So when searching for vehicles to match up with GW figs, 1/54 would seem quite small, so the larger 1/48 scale is a good place to start.
GW vehicles do not exist in real life, and has been noted, they don't always scale perfectly with GW figures, who don't always scale perfectly with each other (marine and catachan for example). Thus there's no strict guidelines for what size models to use when incorporating non- GW kits into the GW universe. Anything from 1/43 (a popular toy car scale) to 1/35 (really stretching it) can be used as the basis for a conversion if it looks right."
Sum up, GW figs can never have a scale because they are not built "to-scale". That said, if GW figs can be called 30mm based on their height then you're dealing with 1/54th scale, but because of their bulk, compatible kits can be found in scales ranging from 1/43 to 1/35.
Hope this helps.

Simply press that little quote button on the top right hand of the post you want to quote and it will take you to a reply page with the quote right on it, no copy paste needed just type underneath.
Also "heroic" scale means that the models, all of them have exaggerated features like hands, faces, and the proportions will be off. It doesn't mean the scale his based on the heroes or main characters and other models are off.
Just clearing that up if you were confused.

Hey thanks that does help I love GW models but to put my own unique conversions and flavor to the models is part of the hobby to me I know they probably would not be tourny legal but it would be fun the field my own unique army, I would still use GW as a base but a few non GW bits would add a lot of unique flavor to my Amy thanks again.

That's something that has always bothered me. Aren't Space Mareines supposed to be like 8 foot high super humans? And their models are barely taller than an IG infantry man.

If you look in the Dakka P&M blogs you'll find several people who have created 'True' sacle marines.
In most cases they look awsome.

What scale? Of the models? If so, then if you look closely, Imperial guard are nearly as big as Space Marines
