What is the general thought about themed armies? Because most of my armies have a theme behind them, if a made up successor chapter with fluff etc or a certain modelling technique throughout (sanguinary guard with dark angels robes army). But, my best army is my tau, they have won the most battles and performed generally the best, and they don't have a theme!! I see a direct link between the amount my armies are themed to the tabletop quality and battle performance; so I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem or have got round it and made a top-notch, battle-winning army with a theme in the background (that is generally shown on the models)? Thanks in advance.

Themed armies take many different forms. Most of mine are mroe rules-based than aesthetic based (i.e: they have self-imposed restrictions on the FoC to keep to the theme). My current WIP themed army is the Iyanden Wraithhost, and I've decided that I cannot use Aspect Warriors or HS choices (beyond the Wraithlord) at all, which is a serious hamper to my army for getting dedicated killy-ness on the board. I'm compensating with Guardian Platforms and Wave Serpents, who compensates for the ranged aspect warriors, while the wraithguard's Wraithcannons should compensate for the close combat shortcomings. In theory, this army shouldnt win me any battles, or stand up for more than 3 seconds. But it will look fabulous when it's done.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Orks are great for themed armies since it's almost a necessity to making a good army.

They are awesome.

And there is not necessarily any distinction between themed and competitive.

I certainly don't make one.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I used to play armoured company, and since the new IG codex came out I have continued with that theme. My army consists of a company command, two vet squads, an armoured sentinel squad (PC), a vulture gunship (twin punishers ), and as many tanks as I can cram in.

I've always considered giving my Sisters of Battle a knightly theme. Now all I have to do is find lots of Bretonnian bits to add on to them.

I've always had a kind of Soviet Shock Army theme to my Guardsmen. They have lots of tanks, and lots of infantry, with some mech vets hanging around. I reflected this partially with the paint scheme, and also with the armies I take.

My armies tend to shy away from mech vets, and more on blobs with power weapons, backed up with tanks.

I do play the FW armored company rules whenever I can too. They are quite fun.

Themed armies are great! My Necrons are called "The Garden of Silence."

Their theme is reality-phasing - almost every useful model in the army can move through terrain, phase through it, land on top of it, etc as if it didn't exist. And...they're garden themed!

Traitor guard count as a theme?
But my loyalist guard are a sort of urban themed force, if that counts, snipers and veteran squads with flamers, greyish fatigues, called them the "Cromdah 172nd gate guards"

Deadly Daisies of doom = EPIC WIN!!!!!

I also have a friend who is reviving an old chapter for use with GK codex: Astral Knights

That being said, I have always dreamed of doing an imperial legion (star wars) themed army-either Tau or IG. . . .It would be fun!

My Ork army is a looted themed list; all my ork vehicles are painted in a different clans colors (I was deciding which I liked best), then have the clan marking "scratched" out, and a blue Deathskull added, with some blue splotches all over.
