If you have or would design your own Space Marine Chapter howdid/would you go about it?
Fluff first would you basit on an old earth culture, perhaps your colour scheme come first, Codex army list or one of your compleat making.

Feel free to go as indepth as you want!

I would base my own chapter on the warrior knight/monk orders from the crusade. Using probably similar rules as the black templars. However i would call them the knights templar and they would hacve a re and black colour schem however my veterans would be robed like dark angels. Overall it would be a mix of BT and DA as they both have some individual traits and models similar to what i want.

This is my own chapter fluff.
The original idea came from a report of the Assassin that i found a while back.
I built on the idea and they ended up usng my favorite tactics.
They draw inspiration from Alpha Legion and Night Lords but have a generally relaxed organisation.

Basically, I started with the idea of Odin from Norse mythology being able to talk to people who were hung at the gallows. Started up as a theme around gallows, went to execution in general, and just built up from that.

I friend of mine was telling me how he heard about a biker gang called the Sons of Silence, talking about how the name sounded like a marine chapter. So we rolled from there. Oddly enough they seem to be biker heavy... hmmn...

Lots of trail and error. I wrote lots of other chapters before settling down on just one chapter.

I plan on doing a fluffy forgeworld space marine chapter called the Aeonian Guard that will be a slow project.

American Space Marines who fight together as a chaper. they don't split off into companies fighting all over the place. they just find a massive strong hold and liberate the people with freedom cannons (demolishers)

thought about basing a chapter off of my hometown, cleveland oh. a dying off chapter the is rusting away slowly. maybe use blood angels rules for fun.

I suppose my method boils down to

Pick a chapter to be a successor to,
Pick a quirk that makes them unique
Pick a flaw
Pick a strength that allows them to barely overcome their flaw
