Latest in our series of "when video games turn real," here's the US Army's newest addition to the wargadget arsenal. The Individual Gunshot Detector, produced by QinetiQ, is an acoustic monitor attuned to tracking down the source of gunshots just by their sound. It has four sensors to pick up the noise of incoming fire, and its analysis of those sound waves produces a readout on a small display that lets the soldier know where the deadly projectiles originated from. The entire system weighs just under two pounds, and while it may not be much help in an actual firefight -- there's no way to distinguish between friendly and hostile fire -- we imagine it'll be a pretty handy tool to have if assaulted by well hidden enemies. 13,000 IGD units are being shipped out to Afghanistan later this month, with a view to deploying 1,500 each month going forward and an ultimate ambition of networking their data so that when one soldier's detector picks up a gunfire source, his nearby colleagues can be informed as well.

I highly doubt I will ever see that, the Army has enough trouble replacing broken sights on weapons, nods that don't work, and waiting a year and a half to buy more IR lasers for weapons...

Maybe you hang out with immature women. Maybe you're attracted to immature women because you think they'll let you shpadoink them.

Not really of much use. A good sniper fires only once.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Haven't they had these available for vehicles for a few years now?

I mean, I do understand the need for one in a team without vehicles, just asking.

Here I thought soldiers already had some capacity to figure out where bullets were coming from...

Then again I don't really know how this thing works. Does it just point out the direct or does it give some kind of distance? That's the thing for me I guess. I don't see a need for a device that says "shooter that way." Soldiers already know how to figure that out, and I doubt some gadget that does the same job is really worth it's cost.

Yep. I think they've called it the 'Longshot'? Something ridiculous like that.

Pretty cool system though, not sure how much good it will do for infantry.

Lots of snipers aren't actually that good though. Particularly the ones in Afghanistan.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Individual gunshot detectors?

I Guess it is a good upgrade from the current "squad level gunshot detectors": The Afghani/Iraqi defense force members that always look scared sh*tless hoping not to take the first bullet out on patrol with the infidels:
