Subject: Vassal only army anyone?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has tried to do an army in which only was played on vassal. Like for instance, you buy the new dark eldar codex, but no models, and play it on vassal only. This has seemed like a tempting idea to me as i see painting as a chore, and have enough orks to build for the next year. I understand that gaming on the tabletop is more fun, but this is an option at a fraction of the price. Or maybe just to try an army out before you actual invest the money to get a decent sized army? Just an idea, has anyone tried something like this?

I guess you could if you only wanted to play.
Personally, I enjoy the hobbies of collecting an army and painting models in addition to the hobby of playing.

I too would rather build and paint the models than play with them if I were forced to choose. Vassal is useful for testing out armies, but I would never by the codex to just play.

I buy every new codex just because I love to read. This has the added advantage of allowing me to play the army on Vassal.
I've played at least 3 games with EVERY codex thanks to vassal, and it really helped make me a better 40k player. Obviously it's still quite a hassle and nowhere near the real thing, it's still a way to test things out before spending the money.

I didn't know we could get vassal40k any more I thought GW stamped on it a couple years ago, right before I heard of it. If I am mistaken please someone PM me the details.

Just google it, the website ends in .info, it's like the 4th or 5th result

I just posted this in the other thread about a computer version of 40k:
GW sent a C&D letter, which forced the 40k Vassal team to operate outside of a place that enforces applicable IP law.
Vassal has had a thriving community for the last couple of years. Vassal40k.info will get you the 40k module and www.vassalengine.org will get you Vassal.
OP: Vassal 40k *IS* a computer version of the tabletop game. Play on it. If you don't have one, I'd advise you to acquire a headset and download Skype - most Vassal players use Skype for voicechat during Vassal games.
----------------------------
OP: In reference to your OP question, I'd encourage you to do so - for PLAYTESTING purposes. Vassal is a great way to try new units and armies, and to playtest things and practice for tournaments when you don't have a FLGS close enough to do so, or want more competitive gaming than you can get locally.
As a hobby in itself, that doesn't result in you putting the models you've been trying out on the board.....seems like a waste?

There are some issues though, specifically with TLoS.
I played against a Daemon player with my Tau. He had never played Tau in IRL. He tried saying that my Crisis Suits couldn't see his BLOODTHIRSTER standing on a HILL because there was a piranha in the way. He then tried saying my Hammerhead couldn't shoot his Bloodcrushers because a Piranha was in the way.
If you've seen a Hammerhead and Piranha model in real life, you know that a Gunship would have no problem firing over the little fast skimmer.

It helps if you establish conventions about what can shoot over what before the game starts (either via something like warmahordes rules or just declare things). The important bit is that people agree on it.
