Ok I may be moving soon and a thought occurred to me
In a hypothetical situation, you've moved countries and found the address of the only gaming group for miles and miles, not only that but the terrain is godlike and it has a bar with cheap drinks
Now it's your first time there and we all know first impressions last the longest
So as the new player do you take a balanced army but run the risk of being trounced by all, or take a beardy one but then be disliked by all as a 'power gamer' - and no you can't take 2 lists!
Also as a member of an established club when a new player arrives and says he's 'good' do you take a tournament winning army first time or a 'fun' one?

I would take a balanced list.

First time there ...
Bar with cheap drinks ...
Want to make a good impression ...
Buy the first round (even if it's the only one).
Take an all comers list and play as hard as you can with it.
(In my area, an all comers list is one that can smack BA or SW to the seven hells they come from. No-one plays SM armies that aren't using either codex [except me, but I don't care about winning]).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Just bring a friendly list. If you bring a super-competitive Internet tournament list, not many people will be enthused to play you again. Unless of course, that's the environment there. Bring something balanced, buy a drink for your opponent after the game, and just try to relax and have a good time. If you get trounced, there's always next week.

Elite Tyranid Warrior

We to the GW down in Delaware near my buddy's house to check it out a few months back.
I brought a balanced Tyranid list. Most of the units I used "Looked Cool". Played two games, good icebreaker.

Don't be a mong, just play the game as you feel you'd enjoy it......ever hear about "Hustlers", no not the mag, although that would make for an interesting thread I think.
My advice, start as you mean to go on, don't downplay yourself just to fit in, let people get to know the real you and how you like to play, that way theres no surprises later on.
If a club can't accpet you for who you are (in game terms) do you really want to play there? Won't you get bored after a while playing at a level, or in an environment that doesn't inspire you?
Remember, this ain't no My Little Pony after school chess club, THIS IS WAR!! No mercy man, go take some skulls, and leave them whiney b1tches to lick there bloody wounds after you leave.....take their houses, wives and daughters, and trample their inbred armies to dust.....
....Oh, and don't forget to enjoy yourself, it is a game after all!

I'd bring my usual list - ie bring units I like the look of and have painted.
If I usually took face smashing lists, I would bring something a bit tamer - better to start softly and then step it up than start too strong and get everyone's back up.
However, I would probably call up this hypothetical gaming club (or go in and speak to them) and see what kind of players they had.

Hypothetical only... Just interested to people thoughts when walking in cold, yes you can phone and check message boards etc but hey this is more interested in thoughts to walking in somewhere blind.
Personally I'd take a strong list but not a no holds barred list

Reason I asked is because there is a place like the one you described.

The problem is that you aren't asking a reasonable question. Instead of asking us what we'd do, you're asking us which of those 2 options we'd find to be the *least* crappy if we had to be pigeon-holed into choosing one.
You're simply not going to get a good discussion out of that.

The first time I go to a club, I don't go to game. I go to see what the players / place / atmosphere is like. Doing that would let you gauge if the players match your usual style... Last time I did that I ended up with a fiancée though, so be careful
