Either by fluff or by gameplay or both.

Mine:
I think I may be the only person on Dakka to say this:
Ultramarines.

Seriously. They are the chapter by which all others are measured.

On a hate rampage.

In fluff-Yes, ultras are supreme.

But they are SOO overused, its upsetting.

Probably Knights of Blood, or Black Templars.

Blood Angels, I like most of the fluff (mostly the chapters fluff, not all the characters fluff like Mephiston... please) and their playstyle. I always want to get up close and personal or play with air superiority, BA has them both

Do Soul Drinkers count? If not, then I have to say Dark Angels. Dark Green = Bad Ass.

Are they really? I've never played against an Ultramarines army. I'm actually thinking of starting drop pod Ultrasmurfs someday.

For fluff and looks it's the Space Wolves.

Although recently I've taken a liking to the Legion of the Damned. Not a proper Chapter I know, but hey.

I have to say a tie with me between space wolves and salamanders. i love both of their fluff, especally of how loyal they all are not just to the imperium, but to its subjects as well. As well as their play style, i like that they are both armies that can get up close and personal.

Just off of fluff alone, I'm a fan of the Black Templars. The vast amount of Biblical references is entertaining.

The Salamanders are a close second.

Blood Angels, they are simply a Bad-Ass Chapter in my ophinion. Although some of the Character fluff can be absurd (COUGH Mephiston COUGH), they look great on the table and they do have some good fluff too, especially with Sangiunus, who is the best Primarch IMO, with Horus running a close second.

I'm starting to warm up to the updated space sharks. Now called Charcharodons and they have a Maori design to them, which is the coolest culture you can choose for an army.

Eye of Terra.

I'd have to agree and say the Ubiquitous Marines as well.

The reason I like them is that they aren't space vampires or space were-wolves. They seem to be the most human of the Space Marine Chapters and are more representative of what the Space Marines were supposed to be in the first place... super warriors designed to combat the 'Alien' in defence of mankind.

They aren't drinking blood, turning into were-wolves, or having their skin turn black because of some strange genetic conflict with their homeworld (wha...?) as an excuse to have ominous 'black' skin and er, red eyes... *sigh*

Because they are the Ubiquitous marines they are constantly maligned by fans because they aren't frought with some titanic angst-ridden struggle for their own survival and are seen in some fan circles as the lesser, still loyal 'plain-jane' sisters of a Jerk-Emperor *breath* who brought the galaxy to its knees because he just didn't undertand that his children needed their 'absentee' father 10 thousand years before... *breath* ...Ok, a huge over-simplification of the previous 10 millenia, but still valid.

On the game table, GW did them and the other 'vanilla' Chapters a huge disservice by furthering fan angst with the marine codex, but that's to be expected when you need to sell miniatures. They should have put all marines in a Marine codex with perhaps a small blurb, perhaps a page or two about the history of the main Marine Chapters. Citing any fluff based reflections on the gaming table which highlight different methods of play based on certain abilities inherent in their Chapter. Rather than what has become a series of one upmanship based codexes. This should have been done with the Chaos forces as well imho, and allowed GW to update and refine the other existing factions.

Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good story about angst-ridden titanic struggles like the next guy, but I always come back to the smurfs when I need a break from some of the other cartoon Chapters where super-warriors are given a further helping of over-the-top-ness.

I hope this didn't come across as a rant, but it has long been a pet-peeve of mine (and others in my GG) for a few years now.

P.S. I like the word angst...

I've always had a soft spot for the smurfs. They were the first army I ever collected (I was kid, what do you expect) and although I've moved onto others since then they remain in my heart as the noble warrior-monks that epitomises why Space Marines are just so damn cool in the universe of 40K. Now, I havn't kept up to date with the fluff, and it seems to me from what I've read on here that Marines have been massively over-hyped by GW and pushed as the poster boys for the hobby, and none more so than the Ultras. I can quite easily ignore all this myself, I buy my models on ebay, I only go into my FLGS and we play the rules how we want to. Don't hate on the Ultras for what GW have done to them.

I'll go with Crimson Fists. I have a weakness for underdogs that have been stomped but keep on fighting.

In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.

In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos.

Also, how freakin' cool is that model on the right with the bionic leg. I'd put him in my own chapter if he wasn't covered in Ultramarine symbols. I might buy him and paint it up anyway, it's such a sweet minature.

Anyway, the answer to the question is my own chapter is my favourite. I might put the fluff for them up on here one day, if I can be bothered. They're called Hazmarines, their colour is dark green with yellow and black trim. They live on an ecologically destroyed planet near a minor rift into warp-space.

Black templar all the way. supposed to be only 1000 marines in a chapter, and they are almost strong as the legions of old, at around 7000 or more marines. Rebels WITH a cause. Plus their armor and heraldry is second to none IMO.
