Headed to Adepitcon in a few days and I was (am) planning on taking my army in a 720 and carrying it on the plane.

United lists the rules / dimension for a carry-on as:
must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin;
must not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches* (114 linear cm); and
may be required to travel as checked baggage if the bag cannot be safely stowed on your flight.

Battlefoam lists the 720 as:
Bag Dimensions - 16W x 12L x 12H

Which is too large to fit.

Does anybody have any experience taking a 720 as a carry-on?

If I can't carry the 720 on, what would be better shipping it (via Fedex or UPS) or checking the 720 on the flight?

It depends on the airline you're flying with - a mistake that Romeo has apologized for (probably on more than one occasion).

United has wickedly small carryon allotments.

Safest bet IMO is bring the 432. I've had no problem with it on any airlines.

Thanks dash.

I'd love to bring a 432, the trouble is I don't own one.

Check it or ship it?

What do most folks do that are flying to Tours?

Ship it. You have a tracking number to know where your stuff is as opposed to waiting for an airline drone to tell you that the case was sent to Sacramento.

Plus you can get insurance on it if you ship it.

Yeah you are going to get hosed on shipping at this point too.
If you need it by Thurs night you most likely will have to 2-3day it or next day it to the hotel. Big time $$ for the box Dims not the weight.

You might have to box it up and check it at check in.

I have heard of people checki.g them witout issue. You also might want to take it through as hand luggage thru security to the gate, where they will most likely make you check it anyway. This will give you the benefits of having it in your sight and care up through that point, and possibly a safer spot for fragile items whne checked at the gate. Remote chance on the last bit but better than nothing. Just a thought.

Hmmm... I think if it were me I'd take my chances as a carry on and check it at the gate if needed. You'll have some with the TSA getting it trough security tho.

You may want to go buy a Carry On luggage piece that fits the dimensions allowed on your flight. It will likely be cheaper, and easier then shipping or checking your luggage. My carry on, which fits the dimensions of all allowed flights, was $50.

On a side bonus. It fits quite a few army transport trays, and would like fit the battlefoam ones. Packing with tissues from there and maybe a few t-shirts would keep your stuff safe, and cloth you for the few days.

better dealing with TSA hand checking it in front of you than checking it, have them open it because the xray is all WTF, and rooting thru ur pieces where you cant see.

I've had to fly alot for my job, what I did when I knew something wouldn't fit was hand carry it, then before you board and they say "Sorry Sir that's going to have to be checked" just apologize and hand it over. Less chance of it getting lost in the mass shuffle of luggage that occurs. And, you may, may be able to make it fit in the overhead. I've gotten 3day bags that were way over the size limit to fit, of course you may not want to mash your minis up, but worth a shot to see if it will fit without crusing stuff. Just a tip also, but if you dress "nice" or more professional then sweat pants and a stained Tshirt (think slacks and a button up shirt) their going to be more inclined to help you.

A few things noted above:
-Dress nice, be polite, and they will help you. 100% true. I have pulled the carry on didn't fit at the entry to the plan and they hand it to the baggage handlers to put right into the plane.
-When I had to I mentioned. "Sorry for the inconvience, can you mention to them this bag is fragile, i know it may not help at the next airport, but its significant important to me. I am happy to open it up to show you if you have time." The result was the person understanding, I saw them mention it to the handlers who placed it on the plane. Things arrived a little jumbled but ok.

The official word I got from Romeo when he made the 720 was that he has been physically able to get the bag onto several flights by putting it under the seat. Having talked with him about the matter, I am completely convinced that he actually has done this.

However, as you pointed out, the 720 is way beyond the standard allowable carry-on size for airlines, so his ability to do this has been because he's been able to get it past the airline workers without them noticing its size. Obviously if they spot the bag, they are probably going to make you check it, so you're basically running a gamble each time you fly with it.

As of yet, Battlefoam's best bag for check-in airline travel is the 432. I think Romeo may have something exciting to announce at Adepticon this year, but we'll all see for sure in a few days!

So as for actually traveling TO Adepticon this year with a 720, just be aware that it does exceed the maximum size the airlines allow as a carry-on bag, but it is theoretically possible to travel with as a carry-on, provided you don't get spotted and it does actually fit under the chair in front of you (as it most definitely won't fit in most overhead bins).

I travel with 2 backpacks all the time and have yet to have someone suggest checking them even on the smallest of planes. Maybe a decent solution would be 2 432s?

There's no doubt in my mind you could get away with 2 432's...one as the carry-on and the other as your personal item.

However, like I've been saying, once Adepticon rolls around there might be something interesting on this front from Battlefoam to consider (of course, that doesn't help you get your models to Adepticon THIS year, I know).

I took the trays out of the 720 and put them into a carry-on I've used before and wrapped my baneblade in foam rubber. I'm worried about it since it is a resin baneblade.

I plan on carrying that bag on and treating it very gingerly.

I do a bit of travel, and I have a 720. I can't imagine trying to get this thing under the seat. Maybe in the overhead bin if you didn't have any luggage. Who needs anything else anyway?

If the 432 works as a carry on, I'm wondering what the "Official" Battlefoam carry on will offer?

Ideally, a form-factor not unlike a "standard" roller-bag carryon (10 x 16 x 24 inches). Done perfectly, this would give you about 18-20 inches of foam (The 432 holds 7.5".)

Serves me right for not really knowing the size of a 432!

Thanks!

And yeah, that sounds awesome - I hope Battlefoam is doing something close to this...

They must be. Which could finally get me to pick one up. With that much foam, I could actually fit 3000-odd points of stuff in one bag, leaving me a backpack or something for all my clothing and so forth. Then all I'd be checking would be display boards. And those could alternately be shipped.

At that size carry-on, they'd be crazy not to figure out a way to allow their travel display board to fit in somehow as well, wouldn't they?

I don't think it'd fit - those dimensions are essentially 2 BF trays side-by-side. You have to lose something crazy like 3" on each "stack."

Yeah, I've been saying for at least 2 years that as soon as such a product is available, I'll buy in.

Can you confirm and describe the new Battlefoam case now that the tourney is over?
Or anything else new from them for that matter ?
