Hey All,

So I am at a bit of a crossroads. I love 40k, but want to try something different. I have been doing marines for the last 3 years, and while I love my army, I am growing bit bored with them. So I am asking Dakka, what should be my next army?

So far, I have it down to either Tau (love the shooty), Imperial Guard (mob attacks and Russ smackdown), or Necrons (just for giggles).

Necrons are the simplest both to paint and to play for me. Their rules are simple from what I can see, and aside from Phase Out rule, they don't look that bad.

Tau I just like the look of and I can shoot lots of stuff (i like shooting).

IG seem to be the most forgiving to play but they have a lot of builds and options and a whole lot of rules, characters, abilities, orders, and would be a lot of models to paint.

So anyone have any thoughts on what should be next for me to play?

Cheers

What kind of armies do you already have?

Just space marines. I can play blood angels (my army is mostly red) if I want, but wanted something not marines really.

Is cost a factor? Cause IG is arguably the most expensive army to field. Necrons are also expensive as they are mostly metal. Tau would be the least expensive to field. Their battleforce is great, and they can use wargear to soak up a lot of points.

Competitive wise right now its probably IG->Tau->Necrons.

Also how are you on painting? Cause you are going to be painting a lot of little flashlights if you play IG. Your right Necrons are very easy to paint. Tau actually have a lot of different color schemes, and you can basically make one up and it will probably look great.

Thanks PraetorDave. Cost is somewhat of an issue. I could probably get away with a few hundred bucks over the next few months, but that would only buy me a couple tanks and some troops if I went with IG.

Tau may be good as I can field a lot of crisis suits and and battle suits for not a great deal of money (i like action figures).

So for now, IG is out due to expense and time investment. So not its down to Necrons and Tau.

I would stick with Tau also (no biased opinion here )

They're cheaper, and there's plenty of models on eBay if you want to go that route. Plus, you gotta love the shooty space commies!!!

And if you're drinkin' well, you know that you're my friend and I say "I think I'll have myself a beer"

So thats (sorta) two votes for Tau. And yes, I like the shooty-ness of the army.

Tau!

Model count is moderate (Kroot can make your army seem huge suddenly), so cost isn't too crazy.

You can dip, glaze or wash your kroot to make painting a breeze.

Painting suits is CAKE, they are all flat surface!

Plus. RAILGUNS.

I would wait until the New Necron codex comes out (I believe its this summer). That way you can see how they changed and whether or not you still like them. Plus they should have new models.

Tau are immensly fun if you can pull it off, plus there's a good number of modelling opportunities on Battlesuits. Although the same can be said for IG too, I only know a handful who have the patience to go through with it throughout the entire army. Plus the Tau Battle Force is one of the few which has items that you might all use.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Yea, I heard rumors about a new Necron codex (where do you find that info by the way) but wanted to start something that I may have ready for Ard Boyz this year (if not i can always use my ever dependable marines).

So I think I will go with the Tau Empire, as voiced by the Dakkaites. If Necrons do come this summer, I will take another look at them and maybe wait for the newness to wear off.

I believe there are some threads on dakka (dead by now, I think) which discussed when the Necron codex is coming out. Pretty sure the most reliable rumors say it's the next 40k in the works. Tau would probably come next, as they are also pretty outdated. They definitely still seem to be a good choice if you want to go shooty, though. I only know one person who plays them, and I haven't faced his army, so I really don't know from personal experience, though.

I love the Tau, I started playing again recently and decided to start with Tau. I love the way everything about the Tau playstyle, however I have halted buying anything else for my army because I really dont like the way the suits look, and I am hoping to see some new models/codex in the near future.

As for cost though, I can account for that, I started playing with 2 friends (1 Ork, 1 Tyranid) I spent half as much on my army as my friend who was fielding Orks and I was able to play effectively at a higher point value (by almost 500 points higher) Also buying 2 Battleforces is a great way to start your army. (unfortunatly the battleforce comes with the stupid looking stealth suits) after that you only need to buy a few heavy, and fast, and a few more suits, and you have an outstanding looking army, for only around $400.

Another thing about the Tau, is that due to lack of any updated fluff it is widely accepted to create your own colour schemes (which are endless possibilities with Tau) and not even hard core players will complain about you not adhearing to specified army schemes.
