Istvaan III (Or, the Drop Site Massacre), where the Chaos Marines finally show themselves fully, but you can throw in your own twist, if you want.

You'll need the Black Legion, World Eaters, Death Guard, and Emperor's Children color schemes for Chaos Space Marines, and the Iron Hands, Salamanders, and Raven Guard schemes for Loyalist Marines.

I'm guessing the battle would be more or less Apocalypse value in points (3,000, if I'm correct).

Every thread I touch dies.

More than just 3,000 points mate. it has to be well over 10,000 points per a player.

Then the information I got was incorrect or outdated. Still, the Drop Site Massacre was one of the more well-known... "battles" of the Horus Heresy, albeit, a very big one, though the Loyalists couldn't fight back, since they didn't know about the heretical Space Marines yet, and were slaughtered. Though, like I said, you can create an alternate path to it.

you could do the battle for prospero between the thousand sons and space wolves but that would be a massive campaign and would be hard to do

What about the battles between the loyalist Space marines led by Saul tarvitz on the Virus bombed remains of Isstvaan III against the Emperor's children and the World eaters? Saul and his buddies' armour is all a dusty grey because of faded paint and falling masonry.
Small border strikes would be good for normal battles, but the whle thing would be a good apocalypse game.

Many and varied forces in progress according to waxing & waning whims.

I may never finish an army in my life.

IIRC Kronus was no major battle, but more of a skirmish. It would be good for a 2000 point battle

Join the Imperial Guard. The pay's lousy, the battles fierce and you probably won't ever come back again. BUT you get a lasgun.

You'll actually need the Sons of Horus, marble green, with black trim, the Eye of Horus as their symbol.
World Eaters, who were white with blue pauldron and backpack, same symbol, without the head crests they have now.
Death Guard, marble white with green shoulders and trim, symbol was a skull with a six spiked ring.
Emperor's Children, purple with gold trim with an eagle wing as their symbol.
World Bearers, who were dark grey with some sort of open book with flame as a symbol.
Iron Warriors who had the same as they have now, without the Chaosy bits of course.
Alpha Legion, blue, silver trim, hydra symbol.
Night Lords, the same as they are now.

Salamanders, Raven Guard, and Iron Hands were all they same as they are currently.

Working out the situation is fine, the only problems come with trying to find large armies for all these Legions, the necessary models for the Primarchs, and a place, and time, to play what will be a long and extensive campaign.
Apocalypse size should be enough, about 3000-5000 points, be reasonable, with no points cost for the Primarchs as they could spiral into the high hundreds. I suggest reading the Horus Heresy novels Galaxy in Flames and Fulgrim.

You're aware that this is in during the Heresy and not some possibly made-up situation that happened thousands of years later, right?
