Hello,
I'm starting a new project. Chaos Dwarves!
The unit that intend to be my center piece will be Obsidon Guard using Black Orc Models. I plan to paint their armor a slick black color (like obsidion) and there skin red, like the demonic orcs from the forgotten realm series or Fel Orcs from Warcraft.
The question then, is how should I go about doing the black Armor? Anybody got a tried and true recipe for this effect?

Obisdian armor? Really? That sounds very cool.

Paint it black, mix in some gloss medium as you do successive stages to get the 'layered' effect?
Worst comes to worst: Vallejo has a "Glossy Black" color that fits the bill.

Might be as simple as painting black and sealing as normal, them putting a brush-on gloss sealant on the armor.

Black with highlights of purple and finish in gloss, simple. Maybe even a wash of leviathan purple or two to leave a hint of purple on the base colour.

Black, lined with purple, is what I would do. Or black, highlighted with purple.

No, no, no. Black with purple highlights will look too harsh.
I'd blend an almost-black purple into a slight brighter purple, and then gloss over the top.

I would honestly say avoid purple. It tends to look too...artificial.
If you're using GW colors, "Necron Abyss" could work though.

Vallejo do a metallic medium that could work well, otherwise try a glossy black from tamiya or vallejo again.
If going the purple route, i'd look more an ink/wash than a strict colour, just to get that sheen/tint more than outright colour.

Alright, i am going to be finished painting my rabble soon and will be ready to begin testing this color scheme.
I think I'm going to go for the purple wash over black, I'll let it dry and see what the shine is like. If it needs to pop more, I may try and blend purples, or add the gloss coat if the ink (talkin' old school gw here).
Thanks for all the advice, and ideas. I hope to be able to throw up a picture or two in the next week or so.
I wish I had a few books and could afford to buy some of the mediums and colors you guys suggested, I'm going to with the colors i have on hand and see if I can make it work. It's hard working such an expensive hobby with such limited funds....

I'm pretty new to painting but I just wanted to throw out that I have never been able to see a wash over pure black. What kind of wash are you using?

Well, I haven't gotten the Mrs. to take any shots yet, but I ended up throwing old school GW purple ink right over the black primer. I really think it feels like obsidian. I'll get a picture up as soon as I can.
Thanks for all the advice.
