Turns out, yes... and they called it "Flort."
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50166917

My wife and I were there yesterday and she randomly spotted the box and asked if my foam trays would fit. (Emperor bless her.) A little Droidery later and yes, it turns out they perfectly fit the standard Sabol tray sizes. Eerily so. The best part is they cost only as much as one of the foam trays.

So I bought two. Here's the rundown.

Their footprint is 13x15", big enough for two trays side by side like the army carriers, and they are 12.5" tall, a bit taller than the carriers. The sides and bottom are quite rigid with cardboard or some such inside. The top is just canvas, which limits the ability to stack them well. The top closes with a zipper, and interestingly the bottom with velcro edging. I think they did this so it can be collapsed flat to ship, but it doesn't seem to be an issue anyway; the velcro attaches parallel to the ground and so holds really well. I might not try and carry a sand bag in there, but it handled models perfectly well.
Now, there are no handles or straps, other than than a little tab to use to pull it out of a bookshelf (it fits exactly in their larger shelves). My plan is to make a leather shoulder strap/harness to carry them if I need to. Otherwise they are going to store my "home" armies. There is a little window for putting a label on the front too.

So yea, pretty cool for 8$. I figure even if I make a nice strapping system to go around them for transport I will still have a total costs of <20$ for a case. It won't have pockets for dice etc., but then I almost always carry a backpack for rule books and other stuff anyway, so personally it isn't an issue.

Hope it is useful for you lads!

Nice find! I 'd feel the need to attach straps as a security measure since the bottom is velcro'd though. Might be an option for me for some home storage.

Very good find.

Also good, a hard case that is only $10. I posted in the Off-Topic forum about it recently.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/355056.page

It's been a while since I"ve been able to find these cases in WalMart, but from what I can tell checking some local WalMarts during the past week in Maryland this massive chain store is again carrying the Plano 1404 Pistol/Accessory case and it's still only $10. The two stores I checked out stock two cases at a time and automatically restock within a few days. I bought 2 today at the Quarterfield Rd store and 2 more at the Arundel Mills WalMart in Maryland. Each case is great for carrying 5 or 6 standard sized Imperial Guard or Space Marine tanks and will even hold 2 Baneblades side by side. I also carry my Armorcast Warhound Titan in one with 3 different arms. I believe it's also practical to replace the foam that comes in the Plano 1404 with the figure slot foam GW sells for $20, giving you a pretty good $30 case for small figures. Bass Pro and Dicks Sporting Goods also carry the Plano 1404, but it's usually $20, twice as expensive as WalMart though still cheap for a miniatures case. The Plano 1404 has good sturdy latches and hinges and is pretty durable. I've had excellent luck with the many of them I've used for several years now to supplement my GW, Army Transport and Battlefoam cases because the 1404 is easily adapted for carrying a few larger models, saving more expensive figure slot foam cases for the smaller miniatures.

So, if you need some inexpensive sturdy cases for carrying your army's armored support you might want to see if you can scrounge some these Plano cases where you can find them. Pass this along to your friends in need!

Wow, this sounds great. How many trays were you able to fit in there stacked? (I know this will depend on the thickness of the tray, but I'm just trying to envision it)

Yea, I intend to make like a wrap around strap. Basically a belt to go around horizontally, then a strap going vertically around the bottom. Then attach a larger shoulder strap. (Leather working tools are convenient )

Aaaand action shots:

Side by side. The new case has about 3-4 inches on the Sabol case. Still smaller than my cat though.

The trays fit very snugly.

This probably makes it a little easier to see what I mean about the velcro. It seems pretty secure, but strapping seems prudent.

BrassScorpion: I have been meaning to look for pistol cases for things such as tanks. My poor IG have thus far never taken their armored support with them due to the expense of getting trays for 15+ vehicles, so I am interested in something like that. I am pretty well invested in Sabol products now though, with two smaller carriers and one big footlocker sized one. I generally prefer to carry my army in one container if at all possible.

RiTides: You can get ~8 1.5 inch trays in there in one stack (so 16 total). It is 13" high, so if you have 3-4" trays for your ogres and trolls you are looking at 4-3 high, for 8-6 trays. Beats the Sabol cases by ~1 4 inch tray (I think they are only 9-10 inches tall, though you can squeeze an extra bit in there.)

I have pretty similar collapsible cubes, and I keep Warhammer stuff readily stored in them. They're not the most portable things in the world, but if you're just storing stuff at home they're excellent. Nice find!

Standard BattleFoam trays fit in the Motor Pool bag, so it looks like we have a double winner here. I'm going to Ikea soon too, thanks for the research!

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

Dez: Actually, that's a good question. It looks like Battlefoam trays are 12x15.5, so they won't quite fit in these, as they are JUST 15" wide (and I mean just, the Sabol trays are dead snug at exactly 15" wide (2 at 7.5").
Does Battlefoam make different sizes than just 12x15.5, or offer different sized foam?

Popsicle: You can see "little" Rogies there checking out the bags. I try to discourage him from getting into my army bags though... he loves hanging out in boxes, and the last thing I need is him discovering that there are fun things to bat around in there :( (To his credit though, the little bugger doesn't have much interest in mini's at all, staying off my painting and gaming tables mostly and only once getting caught poking at one.) Of course there is the infamous video of him taking a Rackham horse head off my desk...

Hmm... looks like a good deal. I may have to saunter down to Ikea and check these bad boys out! If I get one, I'll test it with my battlefoam trays to see how they fit. Props to your wife on that one.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do
