Game: Seize Ground + Spearhead
Deployment
Objectives were placed top left in the open, one in the centre shrine ruin, one in a ruin on the right flank and on near by table edge in a ruin.
I lost the roll off and Connor (my opponent) went first. He deployed at the back of his table quarter the Hammerhead, Broadside and squad of Fire Warriors. Pathfinders deploy inside a ruin near the objective Tau side along with the suit units and one Commander. Devilfish deploys with the other Fire Warriors behind it. One Commander and the Stealth Suits were kept in reserve.
Conner hasn't got a lot of railguns but it's really his only real ranged anti tank, so I deploy using the terrain for cover blocking LOS to most of the Battlewagons. I deploy one squad of Lootas in a tower ruin on the right flank and the others on the top floor of the ruin where the objective Ork table side is.
* Tactical Notes
I'm not massively worried about the railguns but they still can be a pain in the arse, unfortunately Connor has deployed them well putting them at the back though everything else is pretty close to me. I will lay down Loota fire on the Devilfish and at the Battlesuits. I'll steamroller all Battlewagons up through terrain and smash into Tau lines, once I've mullered the Tau I'll leave a Battlewagon in cover some where close to the Tau objective, send a unit to the shrine ruin and come back over towards the objective on the right flank.
Turn 1
I attempt to seize the initiative as Orks love to assault eariler but doesn't happen. Conner gets the Fire Warriors into the back of the Devilfish which moves 12" behind the Shrine ruin for cover. All suits move forward that's about it.
Shooting markerlights can't draw LOS thanks to terrain blocking LOS though railguns blast a single Battlewagon, it explodes after I fail the KFF save taking three Orks with it. That's about it.
My turn I move the remaining Battlewagons through terrain all of them get a 1 luckily dethrolla I can re-roll that but one still fails and is immobilised! I move the other two using terrain for cover again. The unit blown out the Battlewagon moves into terrain where the objective Ork side is.
Shooting Lootas in the tower spot the rear of the Devilfish and fire but it makes the cover saves. Lootas fire at the single Commander but score no wounds.
* Tactical Notes
Great, lost a Battlewagon and immobilised one all in the first turn! Luckily it's a objective game so one unit can camp on the Ork side objective while the other one run up the right flank and take that one while my other Wagons charge into Tau lines.
Next turn I'll bail the Orks out the Battlewagon and send them forward while the ones in terrain can just hold position. The two Battlewagons will move up, dethrolla that Devilfish if it's still there and then bail out - I'll call a waaagh! if I'm not in assault range.
Turn 2
Connor calls for reserves with the Stealth Team landing in terrain without any problems and the Commander lands top left corner. The Commander originally deployed joins with a suit unit, the squad moves into terrain with a suit taking a wound thanks to dangerous terrain. Hammerhead moves about to get LOS on the Nobz Battlewagon.
Shooting Hammerhead blasts the Nobz Battlewagon and makes it go boom, looks like I've got egg on my face here as I was telling Connor he has 50% chance to glance and I have 50% chance to save - looks like I need a new KFF! The Commander which deep striked fires at the Lootas in the tower and kills one after cover saves.
My turn, the Nobz move out of terrain and run onto the right flank objective. The Boyz in the Ork side objective just move into terrain better while the other unit bails out and moves up hoping to lay down some fire support on the solo Commander. The lone Battlewagon smashes through terrain with the Boyz bailing out about 3" from Tau forces.
Shooting Boyz on the Tau side drop 39 shots on the three Battlesuit unit leaving one left with a single wound who passes morale. Lootas in the tower ruin blast the Commander but makes the saves while other Lootas fire at the suits in terrain but all are ok.
In assault my Boyz manage to multi assault the single Battlesuit, Pathfinders in terrain and the Devilfish. Battlesuit dies, Devilfish is stunned and Pathfinders are halved and run off while my Boyz consolidate into terrain by 2".
* Tactical Notes
Ok I've lost another Battlewagon leaving one to pile in, which hasn't done too bad. I'm hoping those 20 Orks can survive and batter something else before snuffing it. I've got my Nobz on a objective so I just need to move the large unit behind towards the shrine objective mid field.
Next turn I think I'll play defensively and get the Boyz on the Ork side objective into the immobilised Battlewagon, see this way cannot be shot at and when turn 5 comes around I'll bail them out and have the objective. The Nobz and Warboss I'm going to leave where they are and move the large unit towards the shrine and start taking some objectives.
Turn 3
The stunned Devilfish pivots on the spot and the Fire Warriors bail out as the squad behind comes to reinforce them as the suits walk out of terrain to the Boyz. Stealth Team uses jet packs to move out of terrain, three Tau die to dangerous terrain test unit fails morale and runs off the table, lol.
Shooting the Boyz get hammered with pretty much everything but still remain with only six Orks! Nobz get blasted but I go to ground getting a 3+ cover save with feel no pain, nice . Last operational Battlewagon gets blown up by the railgun on the Hammerhead.
Assault Fire Warriors charge the Orks, don't think they do anything. Orks attack back killing several but the Nob smacks the Devilfish auto hitting and makes it go boom, best result I could hope for taking out 4 Fire Warriors from one squad and leaving the other with hardly any - both squads fail morale and fall back. Boyz move into cover, only four of them left though.
My turn I get the Boyz back into the Battlewagon and that's about it.
Shooting Lootas fire at the Hammerhead and cause a glance but disruption pods make the save. I was going to shoot at the Fire Warriors falling back but Connor has removed them from the board as my Orks were close and would stop them regrouping and they're about 4" from the table edge which probably would have seen them off next turn.
* Tactical Notes
Ok good turn for the Orks dealing that damage to the Tau thanks to their exploding Devilfish! I've got two objectives secure too and I doubt a single Commander will shift the Nobz now thanks to the Stealth Suits running away.
Next turn I'm going to move the full Boyz mob towards the shrine objective and see if I can claim it. The rest I'll keep positioned.
Turn 4
Battlesuits make their way towards the Lootas on the Ork side objective, Fire Warriors falling back regroup and move to take the Tau side objective.
Shooting Hammerhead blasts the large Boyz mob doing a number of them leaving eight left and a wounded Nob. Battlesuits wipe out the Lootas sitting on the Ork side objective. Solo Commander does wounds on the Nobz but going to ground with feel no pain keeps them alive.
My turn I move the battered Boyz mob into terrain to get cover everything else holds position.
Shooting Lootas fire at the Hammerhead but do nothing. That's it for Orks!
* Tactical Notes
I bet you're wondering what I am doing, well I am being un-Orky and not running across the open and getting into assault. Currently Connor has one objective which I have no chance of getting, I have two objectives so if I bunker down on them he really has little to no chance of removing me.
I'll probably call a waaagh! and get that Boyz mob to act as a road block and hold the Battlesuits up. I was thinking of climbing the shrine ruin but the Battlesuits will just more than likely kill the Boyz before I get there.
Turn 5
Connor fires the Hammerhead at the Nobz in blast form along with the single Commander but no Nobz go down. Boyz mob takes some wounds too.
In my turn I get the Boyz mob out the Battlewagon move into terrain and reclaim the Ork side objective. Boyz move out of terrain. I call a waaagh! and run them straight into the Battlesuits with attached Commander. In assault Orks lose, was hoping for the Nobz to I.D the Commander or they hold up, never mind!
We roll for turn 6 and it doesn't happen. Orks win claiming two objectives Tau hold one.
Summary
A interesting game which at the start I thought I was in trouble. I was hoping just to plough forward using the scenery to block LOS and bail out second turn as Connor deployed forward which meant turn 2 assault. Railguns proved me wrong with Connor getting penetrating hits each time which I failed the KFF save twice and he got two 6+ to see them explode - perhaps lucky looking at the odds.
In the end my turn 2 assault pulled it back wiping out several Tau units and acting as a distracton, the Stealth Suits even went to deal with them and got themselves killed in the end and ran off leaving the Commander to hold his own.
What he came down to was how long I could hold my objectives for in a defensive strategy instead of offensive, very un-orky, but it worked! With Nobz having multiple wounds and plenty of Boyz and Connor having only three units to really fire at them there was no way he was going to get them out by the end of turn 5 or even if the game continued. Best thing he could have done is got a draw by going for the shrine objective which would have left him open for moleresting Loota fire.
A enjoyable game where the tables definately turned!

I struggled when I played his Tau, it was what you told me in that my list gave Connor an easy time with target priority. I got a draw once my Avatar got into assault.
I have to say, it couldn't have gone more wrong for you first turn, are you sure you didn't pick my dice up by mistake lol

I checked the Tau codex and couldn't see that it was illegal to do that could you show me where? I also might be wrong on the wargear as I do not know Tau too well but I'm 99% sure both Commander took 2+ armour saves on several occassions.

I might be wrong, I think it was 6 and 3 died and they then ran off though swear when he took them off was more than 3 left.

You can take between 3-6 stealthsuits in a team.
Page 35 Tau Dex.
Iridium armor is special issue and can only be used on one model with access to it. Additionally, using it reduces the suits extra movement to a D6 roll. So if he was just hoppin around twice without rollin it's a no go.
Grats on the battle report man! You and your opponent had a decent battle that you pulled an impressive win from!

Ah yes, thanks for that. Definately took it twice as the deep striking Commander was rolling 2+ armour saves and so was the Drones. The Commander who was/not with the Battlesuits as this was unclear took 2+ armour saves as well. Mental note made for next time, thanks for the heads up.

These are pretty common beginner mistakes for a Tau player. But if he isnt new he has no excuse for the iridium armor or the bigger stealth squad...Next time playing against him I would sit down and verify his list before the game actually starts.

I don't think he was new. I think he has being playing Tau for quite some time. I might be wrong on the Stealth Squad but the two Commanders definately had both 2+ armour.
Also how am I meant to verify his list when I don't know his codex? I can't question everything can I? When playing other people you just have to have trust and also know their codex as well as yours.

I think the issue is that you do not always know when something is not right. If you do not know the army (I do not know much about Tau either), then a claim of a 2+ for both commanders may seem like it is reasonable.

Exactly, 2+ on each Commander isn't too hard to believe.

de nada! Always love to read a good battle report. Especially with an amy I have as well. Always help me with my own tactics to see others work through the same issues.

Actually the both had been set to the side while I frantically painted up my marine army for Adepticon... but I'm taking a few days off from painting of any sort, then will be getting back into painting both again as I can relax and spread myself out amongst the various armies rather than just my marines. That Trygon we got from you is about half-way converted over to my little one's paint scheme... so finishing that will be my first order of business. I shipped a ton of my gretchin over to Ifalna for painting, as well as a forge world Big Mek... I love my grots so sending them to Iffy is a vote of confidence in her painting abilities. Will also be focusing on helping my eldest with his Necrons. He's been waiting patiently for me and my air brush to work our magic on his forces... so it's time to give my boy's armies the TLC they've been so patiently waiting for.

So he's got to show me every single rule and every piece of wargear?
Well, yeah. And you should be willing to do the same. It's not like at the start of the game, you'll be giving each other a crash course on 'how to play Tau and Orks' or whatever, but the codexes should be available from the respective players, and I'm betting that you can both read reasonably well.
If you think he's not following the rules, or even if you're just curious, you should be able and allowed to pick up his codex and page through it.

Come around my area, everyone plays MEQ's!!!! I'm the only active Tau player (that I know of)
As for the Battle:
The Tau had a good start, but really lost momentum, especially after losing the Stealth Team. Good job playing defensive....I know it's hard for an Ork player
Overall, it was a pretty decent game, and it looked like there were several bad rolls on both sides

Cool report, always fun to see armies who have a great weakness and strength against eachother.
