I haven't been playing the game for so long, but I got to say, the leman russ is worth every penny that I put into it.

Yep, the Leman Russ is pretty badass, but have you ever seen a Land Raider (SM)? Or a Baneblade (Apocalyplse IG)?

I'd personally go with the Baneblade as the most badass tank in the game, but it's all down to personal preference.

Especially so since it got more expensive this edition, and the Demolisher got cheaper.

Depends... It carries "real" ordnance-grade weaponry while being well armoured and has lots of secondary armament.


"Best tank" in the game is the Land Raider Achilles - according to the points cost given by its designers.


In Apocalypse, Baneblade has the image of being "badass", but effective? Pretty good in almost every situation, master of none. It's the Leman Russ Battle Tank²

I'd argue that it's the most well-rounded tank in the game. 150pts gets you AV14/13/10, a S8 AP3 72"range ordnance cannon AND a hull weapon. I don't think you can get that kind of deal anywhere else in the game.

I think it's arguably the most cost effective tank in the game, which is different than "best"

I would say it's the best MBT-- not necessarily the best tank overall, as other tanks fit their purposes better.

It's not really a Tank , more of a fortress. I must agree the Leman Russ is one of the best tanks in the game , lots of diffrent varients and options.

I love 'em all, but my current fav is the Nightspinner. So beautiful. So useful.

I think the Eldar tanks are some of the most beautiful vehicles ever made for any game. One day I'll get myself a superheavy. And the new FW ones are so great-looking. Now, if only someone else had made them...

BTW - I have 14 Leman Russ tanks I am currently converting to be able to represent the newest variants. Punishers make me so happy. I almost have to get another one so I can paint it black and put a big white skull on the turret.

I like to get a Leman Russ Executioner, replace its heavy bolter with a lascannon, add two side Lascannon sponsons, plus a hunter-killer missile. It's expensive as hell but beware all tanks of the 41st millennia.

The tank is at least definetly the most versatile tank in the game imo.

You can't have lascannon sponsons. And the Executioner only shoots out S7 blasts, which isn't that great vs vehicles. Maybe you meant the Vanquisher?

How about the Falcon? (no real question) How would we say the good guys' bestest tank compares to the MonKeigh Leman? This is of course before Mat Ward makes the Falcson capable of killing a star - Frazzled's Craftworld Bandido is just waiting for their uber upgrade (and no they don't secretly admire the ultramrines, unless the ultras are dead of course...)
Alternatively One still has to be impressed with the Demolisher with melta/plasma sponsons for all your bug killing needs.

In my opinion the best MBT is the hammerhead with Railgun.
Manuverable, well protected and with a champion knockout weapon, its basicaly the Leopard 2A6 of the 40k world, it may not be the best against swarms, but against other tanks its pretty impressive.

Yeah, but it got Lumbering Behemoth which means you can actually shoot most of its guns these days.

The Russ is a great tank, and my personal favorite. For its cost it's definitely one of the best tanks in the game, but I won't say it's the absolute best. The Monolith is significantly tougher and carries a similar amount of firepower.

I tend to be a big fan of the hammerheads these days with the two different weapons systems.

I'm more of a Rhino fan. What better vehicle to transport the emperor's finest warriors into battle, protected by that heavy paper armour.

Agreed. A BT vindicator is similar in cost and you get only 24" range IIRC. Bit more power at S10 and AP2, but really, for another 48 inchs i'd take the leman russ.

I think Battlewagons are the best tanks because of a couple of their upgrades.

Deff rollas allow you to kill things in the movement phase. It's a HUGE advantage to be able to see if you killed a transport before having to disembark your own men. Boarding Planks are also an amazingly good upgrade, and allow you to take multiple high strength attacks on enemy walkers at no risk of being bogged down in combat or losing men.

I can understand you saying Leman Russ' are the best tanks in the game, but if that's the case how come Medusas/Manticores seem to be fielded so much more often?

Also, I reckon the Waveserpent should get an honourable mention. 12 man-transport capacity, AV12, tougher against melta, fast and good guns.

Monoliths types are listed as: Tank, Skimmer.

So Monolith wins.

Manticores and Hydras tend to do things better for IG actually. The Leman Russ is too expensive IMO, considering for around the same price a Manitcore gets more templates. It has some other weaknesses to balance it out like AP 4 and limited ammo, but it works fine still.

Personally, I'd go with Land Raiders as the best. Monoliths are tougher, but they can't carry Terminators.

I don't play apocalypse right now so let's leave the super heavies out of this.

I'm surrounded by marines so I don't know about eldars, I haven't got a chance to set my eyes on their codex yet.

I was just threading out of exaltation; since I fielded my 2 leman russ they have destroyed a vehicule at each of their firing phase.

I think point for point and overall do-everything usefulness the LR crusader would get my vote. I like the russ battlecannon, but you cant beat an all-over 14 that can haul 8 terminators around, melt tanks, and gun down light infantry in droves for an "I can do anything" tank.

I would have to go with the Land Raider Crusader for being incredibly durable. with looted vehicles as a close second lol

Looted wagons are rhinos that sometimes don't do what you want them to. They're not very good.

I'd have to disagree with LRC's though, they are very good of course, but combine them with their contents and they are very expensive and (from the front) as durable as the Leman Russ.

For 135 points the Exorcist Battle Tank is also pretty darn good.

d6 str8 ap1 missiles every shooting phase can easily make short work of elite troops, MCs and transports.

The organ one from GW also has such a high turret that it's very easy to hide it in cover, behind a building, and still have line of sight from the top of the turret.

I just wish we could squadron them. I'd easily take 6 of them in a 2500 point game
