I preferred Spacehulk.
I never got into heroquest, or any of those D&D monster bash dungeoncrawl things.
I guess I'd just rather be shooting bugs.

I've only played a couple of games of SH and that was about 10+ years ago.
My wife and I play heroquest together though. It is quite fun, though I wouldn't mind having some flamethrower fun with Space Hulk

AHQ went down pretty well near me. SQ not as much, as much as people wanted to play it.

I just recently bought hero quest again ($200+) for a complete box with a couple extra models. Each additional extra character is highly collectable and runs anywhere form 40-120$ each! Its been a blast to create dungeons and such, we bounce back and forth between 40k and the questing. But my god its so expensive to play quest these days

I have Heroquest and Advanced Heroquest (none of the AHQ expansions though) and, I must say, the basic Heroquest is NOWHERE near as involved or complete a game as Advanced Heroquest. Aside from the core mechanics, it's like 2 different games. Basically, don't judge the game based on experience with the basic version, is what I'm getting at.
I have played Space Hulk, but only since the re-release a year or so ago. While I did enjoy the game, it was little more than a regular board game. Yes, there were linked scenarios, but it was a finite amount. If the game rules are the same from the original release, you can get a lot of the old scenarios from old White Dwarfs (I have a bunch of them, fyi). What I get from Space Hulk, however, is that it's more of an evening's session of board gaming, just like a game of Axis & Allies or Settlers, etc.
IMO, the thing that sets Space Hulk and Heroquest apart is the longevity. While Space Hulk is an evening/afternoon's entertainment, (Advanced) Heroquest is a role-playing game in board game form. Your characters level, get more powerful, more stats, better spells, etc. Also, they fight increasingly difficult monsters until you get to a point where you're fighting huge Bloodthirsters and the like. All of the enemies in Heroquest are taken from the WHFB line, so your WHFB minis can be used, as well. On top of all that, there is a game phase that takes place after each scenario where you can enchant gear, buy new gear, heal, and all manner of other things.
Space Hulk, while a great game in its own right, is just a collection of scenarios with next to no room for expansion other than variations like Tyranid Attack.

I think Space Hulk was/is better for one off games, and great for just pick up and play or to kill an hour or two with some mates.
Heroquest is better if you get into the whole campaign thing, throw in some D&D elements and make more of an RPG out of it. I think because of the setting it's got the potential to be a deeper experience, and the few occassions I have played it as part of a campaign have been tremendous fun. If for nothing else, the opportunity for the dwarf to fall down a pit and then have to wait there for 2 weeks because no one remembered to pack a rope, and you have to walk to the nearest settlement to get one.

Man. HeroQuest. I have some of it's bits and pieces still. I also scavenged its partner game Battlemasters.
Did anyone have that one? It was pretty cool. It was like an Intro version of WHFB.

I certainly liked Heroquest but it really needed several players to get the best out of it. Space Hulk is great for two players though. Space Hulk is a more complex demanding game, but then again Heroquest was designed with younger players in mind. Space Hulk was never really too demanding on me when I was young though, I started playing Space Hulk aged 8 or 9 and the rules for that were straight forward too, though the expansions rules with psychic powers were a fair jump up in complexity.
Overall I'd say Space Hulk was the clear winner. It doesn't have the narrative between games or the roleplay element, but it's one of the best games GW ever produced which is probably why it's received three releases and commands a high value on eBay. Though some Heroquest expansions fetch silly prices too.

As much as I love SH I have to say that I've never run a gaming campaign as long as I did with WQ (once a week for about a full year, if anyone's curious).

@Ghidorah:
The 3rd ed spacehulk has slightly different rules from both 1st and 2nd ed versions, but the core is the same.
SM still get 4 AP, GS and blips get 6AP, it costs AP to do various things.
The librarian (the only psychic powers in the game) is the only change from the 1st edition version (Genestealer added Psychic combat rules, which are still more detailed).
Missions can still be adapted from either previous version, but without the extra psychic abilities of Genestealer, the missions might be a challenge for SM.
Several of the missions ARE shamelessly taken from previous versions.

I never played 2nd edition SH, but the latest one has rules (and missions as you point out Chromedog) practically identical to the 1st edition. Not that this is a bad thing, I think they work perfectly for the game! It also means you can translate a lot of the old additional releases (power armour, traitor terminators etc.) fairly easily into that latest release.
Did anyone ever hear anything more about the rumours of a new WQ release from GW? They were along the lines that it would follow a similar path to the SH re-release, one of, limited edition boxset.
