I wasn't sure where the best place to put this is, as it involves hobbying, 40k, and Warhammer. Please excuse the length, I just wanted to get my thoughts out.

Hey Peeps,

Last summer, I fell in love with the look of the Wolf Guard Terminators and swapped my Tau for a Wolf-Wing. I have enjoyed the modeling, and the painting that I have gotten to.

It was a weird jump for me, because I have never been a fan of the Imperial forces of 40k, though I have mad respect for the character and scope of the human forces like Imperial Guard. This being said, I have always hated space marines. This came from my introduction to 40k and seeing 80% of people playing the same army. The more I learned about space marines, my disinterest grew to disgust. I just don't like the idea of brain washed super human warrior priest, devoid of the humanity they lord over.

Of these, I always hated space wolves the least, as they only value the Codex Astartse linen as the softest, most supple toilet paper available. They hold to their own principles of right and wrong, loyalty, and morality. These seemed to be true champions of mankind. I enjoy reading about times when they have opposed forces of the Imperium to protect the innocent or do what's right.

Even still, after a year of playing and modeling space wolves I have started to grow disinterested. I'm at a crossroads. When I got more interested in WHFB, my space wolf painting/modeling project fell to the way side and now that I'm not constantly confronted by how epic the models are. I'm just not sure if this is something I want to continue.

I really feel like swapping or selling this army off, keeping 2 or 3 of the sexiest models to remember. I could look for another whole army or try to liquidate and put the money into fantasy armies or beginning another 40k force. I question the logic of this though.

1.) They are the only 40k army i have right now. I should probably be sure to have an army for both systems at all times so I don't miss out. Even if I bought another army for 40k, its really hard to picture working on it while I attempt to finish my WOC and now Chaos Dwarves.

2.) The army is 1/2 finished. I like what I've started, and feel like if I sucked it up and finished the painting and modeling, It would probably sell very well on ebay or bartertown. Am I foolish to pull out to soon? It's easy enough to sell well painted models, and unpainted stuff, but half painted could be problematic.

3.) The army I've built really suits my play style at this point. I don't know how I'd go about building another 40k army to pull this off. I want a force that can achieve what I like to call the "Omega Strike".

By this, I mean in contrast to the Alpha strike. Which is the one trick pony that attempts to seize advantage immediately by removing your opponents vital elements before they game truly begins. This is a blitz, that generally requires every element to be just right and luck to be on your side. By contrast, the Omega Strike sits back, having planned out the final blow to the enemy and actively achieves this through setup. This can involve using bait that will tempt your opponent into taking up a course that you have set for them, as opposed to pursuing their own agenda. Most importantly, ranged and specialist support (namely long fangs, scout, etc.) work to hobble the vital elements of the other army so that by the time they have reached the killing field you have set, and the time you have prescribed, they will meet your force at half strength. When you drop your hammer(s) on them, this is the Omega strike that effectively ends the game.

4.) I don't even know what 40k army I'd be interested in. I like Dark Eldar especially, but don't know that they suit me. Maybe regular eldar? I understand the codex grants a lot of flexibility. I like tau, but I want to bring hand to hand elements that people can fear. I've already said that I am not interested in marines, but I could think about sisters, or maybe necrons.

I don't know what to do....

I know exactly what you mean. I don't play much fantasy, but I got jaded with my Templars after a while. That's when I picked up my necrons. What I feel keeps my interest fresh, is that I rotate which armies I use quite regularly. I have the same lists for each race, but i'll go a month using templars, a month necrons, a month daemons, and more recently my wraithguard.

Changing what you game with often keeps it interesting, and i'd argue that it makes you a better gamer in the long run as well.

This is why I have more than one army, and more than one game system (I usually run two rules systems side by side - and if they are completely different from each other, all the better).

I switch out (40k) armies around once a month, from my 4 available. It stops me getting jaded or too comfortable with them.

I switch out lists even more often. I rarely play twice with the same list (I have enough models in most of my armies to do this).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

These are all solid ideas, and it makes me think this is a good time to check out Hordes. The problem with this, is that I'm not bored with playing the space wolves, I have a good feel for them and they fit my style really well. I am just sick of them thematically...

Good advice is never to sell off an army. You might be interested in them again in the future, whether it's because they have a new codex, you aren't bored of them anymore, or you're just feeling nostalgic. My Wolves are in a few cases at my parents' house, but I know I'll want to use them again before too long.

Look into other 40k armies. Do any of them look fun to paint? You can pull a similar bait and switch strategy that you like so much with almost any army. Personally I'd be playing far more aggressively with a Logan's Heroes list, but that's just me. You could also try playing a different strategy, since that could be part of why you've stagnated. I got bored playing my Marines as a static force, so I mechanized the lot of them for a few games, just for a change.

A change in tactics can help keep your army exciting to you. A change in army can help keep a game exciting to you. A change in both is sometimes what you need.

Space Marines were my first army many years ago, got bored with them half way through finishing off the army, sold them off, quit the hobby.
Few years later I got back into 40k with CSM, found out they are LOADS more fun than SM. CSM basicallly have everything SM's have, but even more and cooler units. Now I own a CSM army, an Eldar army, and a Tau army and there's no end in sight! My favorite army right now is probably Eldar. At the time when I quit I just assumed that the rest of the armies would only be as fun as SM, so instead of going with a new army I just quit the hobby. Failed day that was. All flavors of space marines just bore me for some reason. I guess cause they're all over the place and you can't escape them, idk.

Since my return into 40k I decided to try Dark Angels, and while the models are really cool, I still wasn't enjoying them. They lasted a couple months and now I'm in the process of selling them.

If you were to ask me, I'd say stay away from Space Marines unless you want to move to a different game/hobby. So yeah, if I were you I'd try another army, but it's your decision on whether or not finishing up your current SM army is worth it or not.

Aye, I'm getting rather bored with my vanilla marines. I want to start a Tau army. Yes, I know it's hard to win, or even pull a draw, with them. That's partially why I'm picking them.

For me, it's not been about playing. I love the way my wolves play. I've just grown old of the idea of them.

So shelf them and start a new army. Proxy them as a few armies you're interested in before buying in, and have fun.

Or find a new way, or new "idea" with them. Make a list that makes no sense, and might not be the most tactically sound, but is fun.

Hi, sorry to hear that you are getting bored of your SW marines.

I have been floating in and out with RL issues this past wee while and found it hard to be motivated to paint and model more of them, so I kinda know the feeling, so many to paint you get a bit bogged down. Best bet is to take a break from them and try something new.... pick them up from time to time to break the monotony of the new army.

Hope you get over the boredom thing, I always enjoyed seeing how you were going and was impressed with the scratch built landraider

Thanks for the kind words. Your epicly models sky and swift flaws definitley inspire me personally.

On another note, I busted out some of my terminators for the first time in months. My one in a half year old responds by howling....
