I'm just curious, have any of you created a non-tournament Norse army using Historical Norse/Vikings as the base members? Seems to me they tend to be a bit cheaper that GW, and by using some Chaos leader types yo can have a pretty nice looking army, but that is just my frugal feelings. What are yours?

The Dwarves already have a strong Norse theme running through out their army. Somehow the proud Norse have shrunk 4 feet though....

But to answer the OP's question, no.

Marauder based WoC would be your best bet.

There is a downloadable fan made Norse army book, that is pretty professionally done. Just type warhammer norse army in google and look for the scribd page. Make sure is the latest version that is compatible with 8th.

Or check out his website below:

I have seen a norse army at a nearby GW based around the beastman book.

Marauders as gors/ungors, harpies represent the valkyries and the various monsters, trolls etc all represent an assortment of viking mythical creatures. Was actually pretty good!

Don't know if you already have models for your army, but I found these guys last year:

http://www.wargamesfactory.com/_product_16676/Vikings_8-Figure_Set

They are plastic, have great detail, and are reasonably close in scale to GW minis. The Marauders tend to be bulkier, with barrel chests and Conan-like muscles, whereas these vikings are more "human" proportions. Some mix-and-matching may work, especially the sheilds and weapons. The heads are just a touch smaller than Marauder's.

EDIT: Looks like their site has changed. Try this link for the Viking Bondi:

http://www.wargamesfactory.com/webstore/hammer-of-the-gods/viking-bondi
32 unarmoured warriors for $19.95; can be spears, sword/axe and sheild or bowmen.

http://www.wargamesfactory.com/webstore/hammer-of-the-gods/viking-huscarls32 armoured, same deal.

Pricewise, they are cheaper than GW Marauders, so you wouldn't even have to mix n' match. Cool.

I bought a bunch because I needed the sheilds for a project. I am extremely picky when it comes to models (hey, I bought 16 of these guys just because i wanted wooden sheilds; that's the definition of "anal-retentive") but would happily make an army of these guys at twice the price. The quality is very good, on par with GW's most recent plastic multi-part kits, the details are sharp, the faces are top-notch, and the proportions are very consistent.

I don't get a kickback, but I do like to support good sculpting And I want to see pics if you do this project!

I have a ton of those, as I am a friend of the old owners, Tony Reidy and Tim Barry, and had picked up a bunch before the take-over. I also have a couple of boxes from Gripping Beast, some metal berserkers from BTD (though it took a year for them to finally arrive after my ordering them) and some metal ones from Gripping Beast.

I also have some Reaper Frost Giants, and a McFarlane Toys Frost Dragon (series 7, but I am looking for a good price on a Series 6 Frost Dragon as well) for my heroes. I will likely pick up some Norse cavalry and maybe some bits for use making Chaos Knights out of them, and a bunch of metal Reaper or Ral Partha wolves to form a pack, but 99% will be GW free (and thus much cheaper).

Revell Germany has a nice 1/50 scale Viking Dragon boat I may also use as part of the terrain, though I have seen some nice ones in 28mm/1:56 scale as well

Well I went a little nuts and purchased almost every West Winds Nordvolk set (except the civilians), along with their Dwarven War Mammoth, 2 of Revell Germany's 1:50 scale Viking Longships, some Reaper Frost Giants, some West Wind's Lucifer Wars Demonic minions (for the Chaos elements), another set of Gripping Beast's Viking Hirdmen, McFarlane Toys Ice Dragon Series 7, various Wolves, Chaos Hounds & werewolves, and some conversion bits to add to the 300+ vikings I already have from Wargames Factory (pre Wai Kee), Gripping Beast and BTD. I've ordered some custom flags, banners and sails from The Flag Dude to make some of the banners found in the unofficial Norse Army Book, as well as a bunch of ravens from Johnny at Megaminiatures (great guy to deal with).

One they start to arrive and I get some painted up, I will post some pics.
