I'd recommend the Battleforce, it's a nice deal with a variety of options. However, I would not recommend using the Possessed Models as... Possessed, but to instead use them for converting your other models/mutations.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

Ditto on Just Dave's suggestion.. grab the CSM Battleforce and use the Possessed to make a Chaos Lord in PA, and 2 more to make Sarge equivalents for the Berzerkers and 5 strong CSM squad..

as for starting with Chaos.. initially, I just started thinking that maybe the Emperor WASN'T terribly interested in my personal life.. and then started feeling like everything my local Preacher told me might have been ... not quite right...

Then, this girl I had a crush on invited me to her "sorority" discussion group.. other girls were there.. lights were low.. a different kind of incense was in the air..

ah.. memories..

I started with Chaos because of DoW 1. Fallen angels of death. Pretty badass really. The more I read, the more I liked the mix of mortal and immortal troops. Space Marines pray and they get sprayed with plasma. Chaos Space Marines pray and daemons show up and kill.

Models wise I started with zero plan so I had many models i traded off or sold once I had a plan.

I read Storm of Iron and I thought caution stripes looked groovy, so I researched Iron Warriors. I ended up buying the entire army up over the course of a few weeks, getting enough GW Iron Warriors upgrade packs to upgrade 30 Marines. That was in October 2009, and I'm still only a little more than halfway through. Every couple months I find it in me to paint more dudes and play them more, but my Guard have my full attention.

On moon miranda.

I started with the Medusa campaing Terminator Lord, a box of old metal Terminators, and a couple 8man squads of Chaos Space Marines (old boxes were 8 man) and went from there.

Leafing through a Citadel Miniature catalog in 1999 and seeing the "Plague Marine" minis, basically fell in love right on the spot and eventually went out and bought a load of the blister packs.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

My Chaos army is my most recent force. I mostly chose it for the converting possibilities, but also because I wanted to create an army of big Viking-ish warriors, most of whom ride motorcycles; but without going for Space Wolves. Also, I was getting ready to deploy to Iraq and wanted a new project to occupy what little free time I knew I was going to have.
I started simple with a box of marines and the small 3-man box to use for test models. Afterwards I had a rhino and a bunch of bikes shipped out to me.

Well, for me it is Daemons, but I started them because I loved the Epidemous model. I now have several thousand points of Daemons and he is taking a bath in Simple Green!

Honestly, way back when I started getting into 40k, the phrase "Death to the False Emperor!" just kinda resonated with me; the more I got into it, the more I liked the conversion opportunities and background.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Reading about the traitors, back when they where traitors in Space marine (what became Epic) and fell in love with the whole story, out of the ones in the books, it was the Thousand Sons that interested me the most, so I knocked a army together around 1990. Looked terrible with their red/orange scheme and a a badly done black 'M' on the pad, but I loved em.

Since then I've had about three more Chaos armies, A Black Legion one, then a World Eaters returned from the warp in the Blue and white, before finally my current Chaos Renegades force.

Best place to start is the battleforce as others have already stated, as if you want an army, it offers the best discount and a good selection of starting models.

Since I read about the fluff, was pondering about if this was the army for me, went to play in my rugby league final (was 15 at the time)

74 minutes later, I have the ball, blood streaming from my face from a nasty punch in the scrum, I roar 'BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!' and the other team thought I was insane and just didn't tackle me.

Never looked back. Chaos is for me

I looked through the rulebook at the examples of different armies, and Dark Eldar appealed to me most because they were dark and nasty but could be girls too. I was quickly informed that if I wanted to play Dark Eldar I would have to wait until they released a new codex, which at the time they said should be months, but ended up being years. I was far too impatient for that, so after a year of waiting I decided to take on the only other dark & nasty humanoid army, and just force the other part on them as much as made sense. Thus, I bought myself a cheap Battleforce (it was half-price that Thanksgiving) and asked my aunt to buy me one too {figuring she wouldn't because it was weird.} Lo and behold, that Christmas I had TWO battleforces. I'm still working on them because I have special plans for one of the Berzerker squads, as well as making a squad of Plague Marines from some of the regular guys.

And while I agree that Possessed are more useful as conversion parts than they are in a game, I still like to use mine. They're an interesting testing ground for me, as far as painting, and they're rather fun to field despite not being very useful.

First bought a box of CSM then a battle force before geting Daemons. I then bought a Chaos Lord in Terminator armour and have built up a large Chaos army.

I picked up the 2nd Ed Chaos codex and started looking through it on the day it came out, and fell in love with the models and units, particularly the Noise Marines and the awesome new (at the time) terminator models.

Built a 20-30 model count 2500 point army, and loved it. (Though really, the entire army was more or less a delivery vehicle for the Chaos Lord & Exalted Champion(s))

When I got back into the game, 15 years later, that 20-30 terminator & noise marine army was decidedly less effective....

The Battleforce is a good starting point for getting in nowadays. I'd suggest building up a few squads of CSMs & Berzerkers with rhinos, and then looking into Obliterators, plague marines, and some of the other goodies.

(For the record, despite being horribly overcosted, Noise Marines are still totally worth fielding if (and only if) you can get your hands on the old Rogue Trader Noise Marine models)

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only rules disputes.

Played regular Space Marines for a decade and wanted to put something on the table that looked like it hadn't been painted when I was 12. Decided on CSM, then kicked around the idea of doing a silly Defiler-heavy CSM army with Plague Marines converted from WHFB Zombies and Berzerker bitz.

Ended up with the usual 9x Oblits 2x Lash Sorc. army because I finally figured out that Defilers and Daemon Princes aren't as nasty as Obliterators and Lash Sorcerors.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.
