Subject: Shooting at Flyers issue...

So we had this come up last night and I conceded to my friend because I just wanted the game to continue. Here is the situation:
Stormraven enters as a Flyer.
My teammate moves all of his guys that have anything that can hurt it to within 12".
Rules for flyers state that all weapons have their MAXIMUM range reduced by twelve inches.
The debate that came up is that since the rule states maximum range and things like multi melta and rapid fire guns have a maximum range of 24" would they still get their bonuses for being within 12" of the stormraven when it's a flyer? My friend was claiming that you take 12" off of each mode of fire (for lack of a better term), so rapid fire guns could never get their bonus for being within 12" and multi-melta could not get the bonus of 2d6 on armor pen.
I disagreed with him because the rule says maximum range of the weapon and each weapon states that if it's within 12" it gets to XXXXX.
Thoughts/input?

Rapid fire weapons do get to rapid fire. Rapid fire range is always 12" regardless of what your maximum is.
However, multimeltas get +D6 to pen at half range, which would be 6" in this case.
Weapons with a 12" maximum range can never shoot at a flyer.
Incidentally, where does it say that stormravens are flyers in Apoc?

Meltas are 6" for 2d6.
Mulit meltas are 12" for 2d6.
*Edit*
As for stormravens being fliers (Flyers?) is in the white dwarf article, according to my buddy who uses the storm raven.
According to the article it said it "should be used as a flier (flyer?) for apoc" but apparently there isn't a datasheet for the stormraven in apocalypse so it's not "official" but it is RAI'd.

No Melta(the weapon special rule) is Half max range, so Meltas(the gun) cannot fire at a Flyer at all, and multi-meltas only get 2d6 @ 6".
A fusion Blaster, with it's 18" base range, would only get 2D6 when within 3".
This is exactly the Same as with Dark eldar night Shields.

I don't know if it pertains exactly to your argument, but the Stormraven has the Ceramite Armor rule which says Melta weapons do not the 2nd d6 for armor penatration no matter their range.

Yeah, I was about to say. Don't Storm Ravens have a rule that makes this whole thing null and v oid anyway? But in any case, I guess it's still an issue that should be resolved...
I'm in full support of the decision thus reached, the flier rules specify that when shooting at fliers your range is reduced by 12". As such, everything that relates to max range would be reduced accordingly.

Stormravens are NOT flyers, they are skimmers.
Flyers are only present in Appoc games where they reduce the range of targeting weapons by 12" and can pnly be hit on 6s by ranged weapons(except AA and Pintle mounts which use normal BS)

in white dwarf there is a formation for 3 storm ravens all loaded with termis (i think) and dreds. FOR THIS FORMATION ONLY do storm ravens count has fliers. for fliers, its 12" minus your max range. if your max is 12" you cannot hit. rapid fire max is 12" if you moved unless your a tank, relentless, or slow and purposeful (in which case you fire 1 shot at your max range -12" in the case of fliers) also always remember you hit on 6's unless your using an aa weapon.

Yes, but the argument was for all flyers, the stormraven just happens to be the one we were using and it was more about rapid fire than melta where the argument started.
