a question recently came up in our gaming group. we have a chaos player who just loves his chaos marines. he even has a chaos warhound. recently, ive tried using DoP's dark eldar venom spam "darklight storm" list - and it worked almost too good. now, the chaos player is asking to use things like land raider prometheus, damocles command rhinos, riflemen dreads, and removing the "insane" factor from his dreads. (not directly stated but obviously an attempt at countering dark eldar) my thoughts are that his codex is his dex, and he shouldnt be allowed to cross codex his army... but he could "counts as" his chaos as loyalists who have turned to chaos, and thus the appearance, but otherwise function as marine codex "xyz" obviously APOC dosent matter.... but is this a TFG thing to do?

Not a TFG things as such...
Let him do it for a game or 2 to see what it's like but remember to tell him this isn't permanent.
Give him the option of having a recently renegade army, if he doesn't like it give him the option of having a chaos army that has recently defeated and stolen the supplies of a loyalist chapter.
Toning your own lists down for casual play might help...

It sounds like this guy is sorta whining. He could role the chaos as a loyalist codex, but tbh its still sorta lame. If he wants the fire power, get him to use lots of havocs instead of dreads. And as for the Imperial armor stuff, get him to eutalize things for chaos.

Using the prometheus however sounds fine, not such a big deal, just like any other land raider that can be poped first turn

i have offered to not use the "darklight storm" list in friendly games. its simply nuts. tournaments though....diffrent ball game obviously. my counter point on this though - what if (prior to new DE release) i tried using eldar stuff with my old dark eldar? would he allow it? - this is pretty much the same situation. old dex, needs update facing new and improved and ramped up army.

edit: his list usually includes at least 2-3 units of havocs with laz/missle. he also features lots of rhinos and plague marines. ive only seen 1 dread, with a single twl ac.

IMO if you're using more than the codex and rulebook you need permission.(Unless you have an FAQ as well)
Let him try out some of the less OP rule changes...

so what would be the less OP? just my opinion but adding new units or options, like riflemen dreads, or new land raiders seems a bit much. removing the insane roll as well... again just kinda seems to me like hes trying to minimize his weakness to compete vrs a newer army, (that tabled him last time, and beat him in 2 previous games). unless of course im over estimating the impact of these units?

Here is something you can go by.

Give him access to riflemen upgrades for his CSM dreads, and a single LR of what he's looking for.

Command rhinos isn't a CSM thing, fluffwise he can't really pull it off.
