Just curious what people think are the best and worst Battalion sets, specifically wondering which contain units you'll actually use and which contain rubbish for one reason or another.

WoC and OK have the best sets.
All the models in the WoC box are usefull, and by making the leadbelchers into bulls the OK box achieves the same.

I'm beginning to think the VC box is sorta crap. It's a pretty common viewpoint that ghouls are the best troop choice, but you only get 5. You also get a corpse cart, but I'm unsure how widely used those are in competitive lists.

personally i think the HE battalion is garbage, its not that expensive to go and get you some archers or spearmen, silverhelms are just sad i mean comparing their price to make them useful as opposed to just upgrading into the Dragon princes or filling fast cav roles with reavers, they just dont cut it and the repeater thrower is pointless, 100 points for a mundane war machine or 2 great eagles the points can be spent else where much more effectivly

In the long run, GW will price all batallions so you have a 25% save.

You might save 25% on every single batallion, but the question you need to ask yourself is this: How likely is it that you will use very single model in the box?
No point in saving 25% in cash, if half the box is made up of useless models that will never see play.

The Ogre Kingdoms box is the best possible Battalion. You will use every single model(unless you really hate Gnoblars). You always will use Bulls and it comes with enough bits to run the Leadbelchers and Ironguts as more Bulls if you don't want to use them.
It's also very easy to convert up some characters from Bulls.

I've seen a lot of positive comments on the Ogre battalion, not only in this thread but all over Dakka's WFB section. I did do a little "Search"ing before I posted the thread.
Saw one comment about the VC box being not so hot, I had glanced at it recently and thought it looked okay, but I hadnt considered it needing more Ghouls. Any other thoughts on that one? What about the Beastmen or Skaven battalions?

I bought IoB with the intention of starting fantasy with High Elves, then living the dream (the army that got me interested in Fantasy) with an army of rats when I have more money.
I was told to get the HE battalion to add to the force, not sure what else to get. Same for the Skaven I assume. Now that I'm making the larger purchases online it's somewhat cheaper, considering the 20% discount of the GBP, which without the discount is already a discount from the CDN price without that 20% off!

Will I be using everything in the two batallions? If so is it worth it to get multiple battalions? If not for both/either I have no idea what to get.

I personally quite like the Dark Elf battalion but if you're not a of either Corsiars or Cold One Knights then it's probably not for you. Then there's the not enough shields issue, it's very annoying to not have enough shields in the box to give one to all 28 Warriors in each box. However getting extra shields isn't exactly difficult just annoying.
Still overall a couple of those (plus a few extra shileds) will give you a really soild basis for a Dark Elf army.

WoC has hands down the best battalion box set.
Being a Beastmen player, I find that the battalion box is silly. I'd much rather see 3 Minotaurs instead of the Bestigors. The Ungors are kinda meh since you only get 10. I just don't get the feeling that this box set is a lot of bang for your buck compared to others.

New Orc Battalion (one with the same image on the front as the codex) or the old one (square box)? They still have the old one at my GW, heck, they have a copy of the brigade as well, though not sure I want to drop $230CDN as my first Orc purchase. (ok, not first, I just bought the codex) Although I just noticed that the Orc Warriors box there has 19 in it whereas the box doesn't exist on the site and seems to have been replaced by Orc Boyz in a box of 10 for the same price.

That's good to hear. I've been thinking about seeing if I can snag one of those in a trade. O&G's just not cranking my tractor recently, and I'd rather paint a small army of elite horsies than mob after mob of green guys with sticks.

I'd suggest saving your pennies for the Brigade, it seems to be the best buy. I'm not really fond of either OnG Battalion.

The problem is, the battalion is $75CDN with shipping online, and maybe I pay Quebec taxes. The brigade is $230CDN before tax because I can only seem to get it from GW.

I disagree, the battalion is a perfect accompaniment to a single IoB
If you buy a skaven battalion + IoB, you have an instant 1000pt (minimum-ish) skaven army, maybe not the best, but playable and a good variety of units. get your heroes and lords (IoB warlord and Warlock engineer), plenty of core troops (think it comes to 80 clanrats/slaves) three special choices (Rat Ogres, giant rats, plague monks), and a rulebook plus templates + some dice.
Obviously don't buy from GW, get from a discounted internet retailer
Sell the high elves, mine sold for about £30 on ebay ( YMMV), use that to buy a doomwheel/screaming bell/HPA and voila! a perfectly decent skaven army!

Agreeing with this. Multiple IoB sets are useful, but I'd stop after 2, honestly. You don't need duplicates of the characters (although it IS the best Warlock Engineer out there), and you're getting duplicate command groups for your 20 rat units. The Battalion allows you to flesh out your existing IoB units with rank and file rats, gets you some more Rat Ogres to go along with the IoB dudes, and allows you to start working on Plague Monks. I've purchased 2 IoB sets and 3 Battalions for my skaven force.

Responding to my own thread, but it appears GW posted the new Tomb Kings battalion. Unless I'm mistaken, they added 8 more skeleton warriors, kept the Chariots and Skeleton Horsemen as-is (I'm curious how much table time the Horsemen get)...and jacked up the price $30.

If it's only 8 skeletons that seems like an odd increase, even for GW.

yea. but now there's a solid 40 skeleton warriors which allows you to do 40 archers or 40 skeleton warriors or 20 of each or however you wanna divide it up.
and yea, theres 3 chariots and 8 skeleton horsemen. I dont think it's too bad a battalion actually.
