I finally got around to actually painting my Emp Children Noise Marines and managed to finish one of them as a test model. This is my first time painting pink, and I must say it was fething hard to do. In the end it still ended up pastel-y and no matter how much I thinned the paint it still kept that texture.

This is him next to a Plague Marine I painted a while back:

Did you just go straight from black to paining pink? You may benefit from throwing down some white first. In addition more layers would probably help; I regularly do 2-3 layers of paint to get a good solid main color.

If you are trying to do blending you might try putting a purpley color in the lower areas and then blending up to your pink.

It was actually a white basecoat. I have no idea how it ended up so chalky, since i used the same method in painting my nids (who have a bright yellow scheme). I did also use a purple undercoat first.

Just add some light pink and while highlights and it will look tons better. Though if you want chalky marines, its excellent

Lol this one may be a little far gone ( I sprayed it with some gloss varnish trying to get a shinier armor). I'll heed your advice for the second model.

I did some pink Emp Children a while back and I used pretty much all the techniques people suggested here:

1. I started with black primer, then painted the armor plates which were going to be pink white first.
2. I painted the pink with thinned-down tentacle pink.
3. I painted a bit of thinned-down purple in the edges. I think you could get this effect easier nowadays using citadel washes- either Leviathan purple or Baal red. Just thin it a bit first.
4. I mixed my pink 50/50 with white, and painted that right over the middle of the armor plates and as a highlight on raised edges. This gave the pink some gradation and additional brightness. From pink-white in the middle of the plates, to regular pink outside that, to pink shaded with purple in the recesses of the plates.

Your paint looks too thick and chalky imo. Digital cameras always bring that out in paint though. I would try thinning you paint down even more, but still using the same method you used just with more layers of thinned paint.

Currently 8 of the 30 Noise marines I have are already primed white, and I've ran out of Black Primer (not really willing to pay for GW primer, and there's no other black primer here) so I'll probaby be going with a white base for a bit.

I did not hightlight the armor with any white, and I admit it looks rather dull now compared to the Emp Children in the 3.5 dex. What is the best ratio for thinned paints? Up until now I've been using a 1:1 ratio, but it still seems to be a bit thick. I tried a 3:1 ratio but that ended up a little too thin and it took some 3 coats to get anywhere near even coverage.

When thinning, there is no magic ratio. you have to find what works for you. The paint should be thin enough to flow, but not so thin as to run.

Mannahnin makes very good suggestions. I have found that shading the pink with thinned warlock purple (basically magenta) and highlighting with pallid flesh works well (mix with the pink for smoother transitions).

But you are off to a good start and certainly good enough for tabletop!
