Hi,

I have a quick Q that came up in a game yesterday.

If you have a squad of devistators some armed with las cannons and missle launchers and one armed with a plasma cannon. If the sqaud is shooting at a unit more then 36" away does the plasma cannan still have to take a gets hot roll even though the gun can't target the unit?

cheers

If you declare the weapon is firing, then yes. This is explicit in the Gets Hot rules

If you declare the gun is not going to fire before you check range, as you are allowed to do, then you are ok - no gets hot roll needs to be taken.

When you shoot with a unit you can always elect not to fire with certain model(s) or guns(unless stated otherwise in a unit's rules), so while I haven't ever seen a specific rule stating that out of range guns fire if the rest of the squad fires, you could always use this rule to not shoot the plasma.

Obrek - guns that are out of range DO fire, they just automatically miss (see, the shoorting rules on check range)

Gets hot! EXPLICITLY tells you that you always take the roll, even if out of range.

cool this clears it up. I had it in my head that the whole unit has to fire. I did not realise you could opt not to fire with certain models.

Very useful tactic - if you want to charge a unit, but want a bit of shooting to soften them up first. You can fire just plasma / melta, or half your pistols, and so on. It also means you can stop them getting a cover save they would otherwise get, as only the FIRING models count when determining cover saves.

So no chance of it happening to scatter in your favor, then?

No. None whatsoever. If you are out of range, you automatically miss.

Cool, that does sound handy now I think about it. Cheers.

I meant to say "and dont want to risk a morale check" as to why you're only firing some models....

Handier still, cool. I need to start thinking about some of these more subtle tactics when playing.

One thing I'd like to add is if you are in range and it scatters out it still hits what it lands on. Played a long time thinking it was out of play when scattering beyond the weapon's range.

That is brilliant. Gonna use it next time I play.
