Myself and a few of the players in my local group are putting together a skirmish based game of Warhammer Fantasy, sort of a spiritual successor to Mordheim for those of you that have played it.

Right now we are in the testing phase for the main rules and the writing phase in terms of the Army Books/Armory. The Army Books are being re-tooled to fit the scope and rules of the game, which mostly just involves changing some Special Rules. No point totals etc. are being fiddled with.

If you'd like to check the rules out and help provide feedback, you can read more on it here and there is a download link as well.

Hope to get some feedback from the community as this project moves forward!

Are you looking for something like the 7th ed Warbands rules? It was basically a stripped down version of WFB for small groups of figures using the standard Army books. The rules sort of fell apart under the changes for 8th ed.

No I'm well aware of that system, this is more like a spiritual successor to Mordheim, just using the existing armies for Fantasy. Mordheim is a fine game but it's very dated and relies way to much on Campaign play, which isn't good for small groups or people who like something short as a pickup game.

I thought of having:

250pts to spend in army book,
no wizards, no named characters
only heroes, core and special,
combat heroes are 50% cheaper because they are easier to hit and kill but still get 50pts of magic kit

max unit size is 10 models (buy a big unit and split it up)
these must skirmish

only 1 musician and 1 banner bearer are needed for the whole army
but these must be bought from the most expensive unit you take,
(so no buying black guard and then having a warrior command)

Banner grants you +1 combat res for the unit is in, and every unit with LoS to the banner can reroll Ld checks
Musician grants +1 Ld to all units within 18"

This system gives you ~20 good models ~40 poor models and has the option of taking a character
you could make it more like mordhiem by reducing the points to 125 and dropping the max unit size

I really would like to play mordhiem but feel that it is too outdated and could do with a revamp

So 2 chiefs and 100 skaven slaves?
Doesn't sound like mordheim to me.
I think a whole re-write is needed.

Spoiler:
Those skaven slaves cannot rank up, so my 10 corsairs can win each time they get in combat
20 attacks, 17 hits thanks to hatred, 11 wounds, 11 kills, you dead, and thats from 10 models
10 units of 10 would get pasted eventually, the point of skaven slaves are to horde over thier enemies,
my system stop people taking hordes of models that are so poor because each unit will easily be overrun by the average and above average basic infantry
20 corsairs and a master with an additional hand weapon, sea dragon cloak and light armour = 250
bring on those skaven slaves Matt! and I shall kill them by the bucketload.

100 slaves=seriously stinky cheese
Use more powerful units to represent the experience of mordhiem bands.

A whole rewrite would be preferable, but GW is never going to do that are they, really?

There are model limits for how many you can take in the list as well as how many models you can "spam", depending on their native Army Book slot. We are working on the Upgrades list, which is intended to be about 1/4-1/5th of your total points.

Also a lot of the standard upgrades are a no go, like Command Groups. It seems unlikely a small band of sell swords would rally to their colors or march in time.

Yeah, warhammer skimish was not mordhiem.
Mordheim should be 8 to 15 models typically, maybe up to 20 for spam races like goblins and skaven.

I would love to give this a go, in my area if you are willing. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Between me and my gaming buddies we would have Wood Elves, WOC, Empire and Skaven down if that helps.

Okay I have the Beta Rules up on Google Docs, the link is in the OP. Please, please, please bear in mind this is Beta, all rules are subject to change and willingly subject to criticism.

If you have feedback I would ask you to reply with it here, or PM me. Please give specific examples of how something could be improved or what it needs to be improved. Saying something sucks or is dumb without cause will not get my attention.

I am currently in the process of re-writing sections of the Army Books to fit the rules as well as writing the Armor and Warband Leader Templates. I am extremely open to suggestions as to what people want to see out of those.

Our initial testing showed everything looking pretty good but that was with three people, so load me up on feedback. If some wording is poor or misleading I also want to know that, I am no English Major and I have not had someone review these rough draft rules yet. Obviously the final draft will be dolled up significantly.

Thanks guys! Once things move forward a bit there will a forum for this project if enough interest is generated.

Edit: Specific things I am looking to hear about are if the game plays fast or if the rules are confusing/slow things down. The intent is to be a fast paced game that does not get bogged down in looking through the rules or arguing.

I'd recommend for the time being just playing beat 'em up games to fully test the system.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Updated with significant grammatical improvements and more concise writing. Some slight rules changes have been made based on feedback. Rulebook Special Rules have been updated to fit the game.

In the works: Army Book re-writes, Warband Leader Templates, Armory.
