So I have been playing 40k marines for about a year now, I was thinking about trying a different 40k army, but while I was at the shop browsing I saw the fantasy line and I thought if I am going to buy a new army, why not try a different system?

I really like the Bretonian models, but I was drawn to the "Isle of Blood" box set because of the rule book. I had a few questions that I would love to have answered;

1. For painting modeling purposes, can Bretonians fight under a single banner, as opposed to all knight having different heraldry, that would make painting a bit easier.

2. Are the template sizes the same as 40k? If so I think I will just by the big rule book as opposed to the Isle of Blood set

3. Is making the transition for 40k to fantasy easy, are the completely different rules sets, or do they have similarities.

4. I like strategy, assault, and speed, do Batorians fit that bill? I really have never liked elves in any fantasy genre, so I am not sure if I would enjoy painting and modelling them, and undead stuff usually doesn't appeal to me.

5. I have about 300-400$ to spend, can I field a decent size fantasy army with that, and what models/units would you suggest I buy?

Thanks in advance!

Ashton

1. It's your army, why not? If people complain, just say that your Duke is so egotistical that he demands those that serve under him have to wear his colors.

2. Same templates. Only new thing you'll need is an Artillery Die.

3. Mostly similar, the devil's in the details.

4. Yes, they'll fit that for you.

5. That should get you more than a decent start(if not a full 2-3k of models). As for what to buy, I'm not up on what's best for Brets.

They're your models so paint them how you want. Fantasy armies, unlike 40k are mostly distinguished by models instead of paint schemes.

If you want all the rich fluff then get the BRB. Otherwise just get the small rulebook from eBay or from another player if they have an extra. Should run you about $20-25.

The templates are the same.

Get the battalion box (or two) and check the postings in the army list forum to see what people field the most. That should get you off to a solid start.

If you're running Brett's decide whether you want to go Peasant heavy, Knight Heavy, or a mix. Peasant Hordes can be fun with your 6 point longbowmen and 5 point men at arms. Knight Heavy is really fun to paint and see on the battlefield personally, as for paint scheme, my Brett's are decked out as Knights Templar, the peasants are livonian woodsmen or order men at arms. For magic I use converted Priests and Bishops for Damsels etc. For questing knights I use knights from other nationalities with their own heraldry instead of the order's, and for Grail Knights I use Ritterbruder converts, which basically just means regular knights of the Realm with Chaos Warrior/Marine horns glued onto the helmets to identify them. It's cheaper than actually buying the metal models for Questing and Grail Knights.

As for monies, if you're going peasant horde, use Ebay, otherwise that likely won't be enough to get the body count you need. Otherwise it would seem fine if you just want Knights, but a bunch of Knights of the Realm boxes and that should be all you need aside from bits for converting. If you want a mixed force buy two Battalions, a Trebuchet or two, and two more boxes of Knights.

brett armies that aren't peasent hordes are a low model count army and will be cheaper to start.

if you want loads of peasents, get them online.

your Knights can be of the same color. no reason there wouldn't be a few Knightly orders in Brettonia that wear the same heraldry. possably the knights would have their own shield design, but apart from that...

frankly, i prefer unified looking armies with rows upon rows of crisp identical troopers.

Well, I would still pick up an extra Batt with the models that you have posted, you don't have enough knights to make 3 units of knights of the realm. Yes you got a really good deal, but I would suggest one or two more units of knights if you're going knight heavy, or at least another battalion (the 100 dolalr box, I can't remember the name) of Brett's for the peasants and spare knights.
