I think it is BT and then SW, but I can't remember how big they are exactly. The reason I bring this up is cuz GK are also unusually large. They're ~3k.

Space Wolves = around 3000 marines
Grey Knights = 3000 marines

DA are 1 chapter.
All other DA successors are separate chapters, they are linked by strong ties of loyalty but they are still separate chapters.

I agree with purplefood. If you were counting the DA successors because of their incredibly strong ties of loyalty; than you would also have to count the Ultra Marine successors who worship Roboute Guilliman as their primarch and still answer to the Lord of Macragge, Marneus Calgar . And If you did that than the Ultra's would beat everyone in numbers.

As it stands the Black Templars are the largest single chapter...and coincidentally the chapter i hate the most, but I digress.

I'm kind of a big deal... people know me...

I agree with beef. It's not like the Ultramarine situation were they are closely allied. "The Unforgiven" are more like one group pretending to be 7 separete ones for legal reasons. They're pulling the wool over everyone's eyes.

Why the Templar hate?

I don't really hate them, just associate them with 3rd edition (my least favorite edition) and I don't really like their conception of marines as 'knights in space' doing heroic deeds and slaying/smiting foes. But, I realise that it's very much a personal thing

Not counting the Dark Angels ( I support the idea that they are all still one legion under the guise of being multiple seperate do to their leaders all being indoctrinated into the inner circle). I believe it goes;

Black Templar with 6,000 and up
Grey Knights with 3,000 and up
Space Wolves with 1,500 and up

Ah. I don't know much about the dark times of 3rd edition. (I started at the end of 4th.)

I see the Templars as more of a group of crazed, militant monks in power armor. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

But in all seriousness, what happened to 2000 Grey Knights? Did they get killed or they just vanished ( like Squats )?

If you're including all the Second Founding and later Chapters descended from a single, First Founding Chapter, then the Ultramarines are the largest, as UM geneseed accounts for over half of the current SM Chapters in existence.

There are 5000-6000 Black Templars, but the Ultramarines have the most desendants, compromising ~60% of all Space Marine chapters.

We aren't counting descendants...
DA descendants are very close with the DA chapter to the point that calling them separate chapters is more of a technicality.
But, if you are going purely by organisation then it goes:
BT
SW
Exorcists (They have 2 extra scout companies)

There's something weird about the Exorcists. They sent 10 Companies to Cadia and 12 to Armaggedon at the same time. Either they got 22 companies or they really get around or GW just screwed up.

If you want, but I' gonna say what I have always said and thats the Space Wolves fluff didn't change much, other than thunderwolves. They were always wolf this wolf that. I know cause I was looking into starting that army when I first started the game. Instead I went with the Daemon Hunters which is why I substitute fluff.

If you want to do it for the Wolves go ahead its your right.

Ultramarine successors specifically do not follow Calgar. They can't both revere Guilliman and follow Calgar, since Guilliman is the one who split them up.

DA successors are specifically in chain of command under Azrael. Two DA successors even use The Rock as their home base.

All that being the case, Black Templars are still the largest.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.
