Hi there boys and girls! welcome to mográine's little fortress log!
In this log i'll document the process of making a fortress (not a complete fortress, only the wall sections etc.)

So i've been inspired by this picture:

Made by sttheo on deviantart. (he has some other awesome pieces of art, mainly grey knights and some space marines)

In the right of the picture you can see the fortress walls, they aren't really all that detailed so most of it i'll have to fill in myself.

Right, now onto the pictures!

First off i started making a mock-up out of corrugated cardboard (which will be replaced by foamboard once i like it) so that i get the size and everything right.
The wall-sections will be 25 CM high, and the towers a little bit higher (i'm thinking 35 CM)

i added some decorative arches, but i'm not to sure about them, should i add another layer to them or leave it?

Next up i made the little blocks on the top (look closely in the picture, you can see them)
I made the using foamboard and cardboard, the black pieces are foam,

And here they are on the fortress,

Looking quite nice already huh? except the front looks abit flat, so i addes some "supports" to them,

Actually it's just one, but in between each of the arches there'll be one. this one is just a rectangular piece of foamboard with a diagonal ending, but i'm not to sure about it. i feel it doesn't really fit with the arches and the block on top. Any suggestions?

That's it for now, next up i'll finish the supports and start on the top of the walls. And the back will also have to get something done, except that i have NO idea what to do here, so i'll need some help with that.

i'll need your feedback on the following things:
- the arches, another layer or not?
- the blocks, are they apart enough or not or to far?
- the supports, what should i do with this?
- the back/top, any ideas?

greetings,

mográine

UPDATE!

Hey there! I’ve been very busy with both the fortress and other stuff, and scenery-wise I’ve started on a little ruin, I’m not far but I’ll upload pics in the next update.

So I started on 4 of the front sections for the walls, next up I’ll either start on the towers, or the gate section I’m not sure yet. Onto the pictures now,

Overall shot of the 4 sections, and a space marines scout for size. The picture is a little out of focus, I’m still playing with the camera’s setting.

One of the sections, I cut out arches in the foamboard to add more depth.

Next update I’ll finish the front of the walls, and start on the back/top. But I’m still at a loss as to what to do with the back of the walls. Any ideas?

Greetings,

Wow, that's a really cool project. The arches look a lot better with the added depth! I think the crenelations (the little blocky bits up top) look pretty good as is. Just enough room for one guy to peek out and fire from!

Overall you've done an awesome job so far. Everything looks super clean, which isn't always easy to do. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Are you planning on adding supports to the front like you had in that first round of picture?

Thanks guys, for the supports, im still planning on doing them but i'm stoll figuring out how i'm going to do that.

I've also made some changes to the crenelations, i've made them abit wider, and lowered them so that the models can still look over them, i'll make some pictures tomorrow evening.

Hi there guys! A new update on the fortress, i promised some pics of the ruin I’m building but I haven’t had time for it yet. I díd get you some more pictures of the fortress.

Right now I’m working on one wall-section, but if I’m happy with how it turned out I’ll finish the other wall sections and move onto the gate/towers. Well, onto the pictures:

A space marine scout is there for size comparison.

The back of the wall, the scout is once more there for size. I’ve added a lift and the white thing in the bottom is a console, I still think it’s a little bare though. I was thinking about painting something of an imperial eagle on the back, or maybe add something else.
The next update should be incoming in the next 1-2 days, until then feel free to come up with suggestions or ideas ^^

Greetings,

Sjefke

Whoa, the lift is really cool. What did you use for the detailing on that and the floor up at the top?

For extra detailing, maybe some light fixtures, sirens, and things like that in addition to an aquila?

i used some mesh i got at the hardware store for 3 euro's for a square meter. it's the stuff they use to put in windows to keep out flies and such :p

i'll definately look into the sirens/lights, thanks for the idea!

Hey guys, i’ve got an update for you! Just to show you I’m still working on this project.

This week I’ve worked on the 4 wall-pieces to get the lifts, floor and buttresses done.
Here’s some scale pictures with a baneblade, it’s starting to look very big, very big!

I’ve been asked for a top-shot, so here it is aswell:

I’ve looked into a way to add some more detail, I’m planning on adding light fixtures, and sirens.

Greetings,

Sjefke
