Is it just me or are the things GW are releasing lately just to over the top?

I'm talking mainly about Grey Knights and Tomb Kings. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of nice bits in both releases but overall just to out there in both rules and looks...

I know it always used to be the new army was the hardest to beat but at least it was done fairly subtly, but now with these latest two releases its 'look, big and bad undefeatable models! Oh, don't worry about the price, you can't lose with these so they're worth it!'

Just my personal thoughts, if you don't agree fair enough cudos to you.

I lost the game!!!!

I think GW are just releasing all-powerful big models to make younger kids (the ones who think all-gold marines look cool) buy them - a GK transformer (some call it a Dreadknight).

transformer lol. But yer I agree, even when imperial guard got re-released they wern't all in your face about it. But BA, GK, tomb kings and all that pricy crap has got so much attention I don't want them... and if they are gonna release a new book, give it a good reason. GK i agree, metal models all over and tiny range needed a bump. Dark Eldar ... meh and tomb kings, well, there was nothing wrong with them! I suppose its just and excuse to bump models prices up. e.g 20 guard for £18, now its 10 for £15. Soo gay.

Please do not use the term "gay" in a derogatory manner.

GW has always been over the top. Since the Stegadon got redone for Lizardmen, they caught on that folks like having a big centerpiece for their armies.

Also, TheGiantPeanut, don't use gay as a pejorative term. Makes you look ignorant and so on.

I'm not so sure about the "large" tomb king release... even the giant spider for O&G, at this scale I start to feel like I'm playing with toys instead of models

However, I remain open to being convinced... with ogres rumored coming and whatever their "big" model is, it could be interesting...

As to the regular-sized models- I don't think they're "out there", but then I play hordes for privateer press too... now They've got some out there stuff!

Even so, it's not like anyone is forcing you to buy the big new models. You can field a perfectly competitive army without them, and enough big weapons like cannons and such can waste them so they're not distracting you for too long.

In rouge trader, you could have models riding hoverboards with weapons in a haphazard fashion. It's nothing new.

But yes, the dreadknight and the weird sphinx-ish thing are annoying.

I like the intent of the new direction even though I don't like
some of the results. Giant spider creeps the hell out of me. No
way that one's getting painted at the house. Sphinx stuff is cool
and different, as are the Stegadons. Dreadknight is cool in
concept but lacking in execution.

I can't wait to see what the "big stuff" for different factions
end up being.

Yeah, I love the Valkyrie (just as big as the other big peices), and the stormraven is growing on me. I don't dislike the Dreadknight at all, actually.

People were really hating on the stormraven at first, but it's pretty cool. And the valkyrie is one of their best models for IG. The new sphinx rubs me the wrong way, but that large spider is great.

Good point, the Sphinx isn't even a Sphinx.
Definition of a Sphinx from Wikitionary;

A creature with the head of a human and the body of an animal (commonly a lion).

But look, the Sphinx with the howdah is all animal!??

When I saw the Dreadknight in the flesh at my local GW, I was surprised by how un-big it is.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I agree. I actually kind of like the model though.

Malfred pretty much hit the nail on the head for me in terms of the Dreadknight.

It's a cool concept(even if it does go against the fluff that we've had on the Grey Knights before)...but the execution is horribly lacking.

I think the issue here is really just an over saturation of these larger models. GW now feels it has to give every army one, whether it fits smoothly or not. Unfortunately when it doesn't it seems out of place, in a bad way. The spider was cool, the stegadon also cool... the dreadknight and stormraven made me lose faith in GW's artist's taste. Not for the concept but for the way they fell short of their concept.

Has anybody seen one that isn't all painted chrome? Aside from the pilot, I mean.

I'd be interested to see what they look like painted flat and battle damaged, while the pilot wears his amor.

It's not a complaint. It's an observation.

And your sign would be wrong anyways, as there were complaints about Mat Ward in Background on Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday.

But now imagine if the Dreadknight had been a psychically driven construct, with no pilot, that fought alongside a Grey Knight Brotherhood Champion or Grandmaster and carried a Nemesis Force Sword and an oversized Storm Shield, with a stormbolter built into the shield.

It suddenly becomes a lot cooler. Even if one can just say it's a warjack.

I think in terms of missed opportunity, the dreadknight is a big one. The model is not ideal, the rules are nice but use an MC basis which makes no sense, and the fluff seems really tacked on.

I think at this point Matt Ward complains about being Matt Ward. Me personally, I don't have a problem with him. His rules aren't bad... I only dislike his naming conventions.

I didn't find the Grey Knights too bad for the naming conventions.

The Doomfist was silly but that was the only one I didn't like.

I like Kan's idea. For rules, I'd give it AV14/13/10, with the venerable rule and the no bonus dice (for melta and monsters) rule. Give it a force weapon and some serious shooting (36" heavy 6 Psycannon?). and it can actually take on monsters and live.

Give it either an invulnerable or ready access to a cover save, some psychic stuff, and it's pretty cool.

This was what set me off. Admittedly I could be a little too sensitive to these things though.

Fair enough. I'm off on the weekends, so I do as little looking at computers as I can. That's really depressing though.

My FLGS has one that's painted kind of a tarnished bronze color. It's not the best paintjob, but it's pretty good looking. I wasn't a fan of the model, but then I saw it in person and I had fewer complaints. It's not as bad in person, and if you paint it something less gaudy, I think it's passable. I'm probably going to do mine either grey or white.

Front armor 14 is not a good idea. I'd go 13/13/10, and that's still pushing the envelope. There's almost nothing that can penetrate 14 front armor in melee, especially if you're taking away bonus dice.

Fair enough, but if it's AV13 I'd want something to protect against lucky lascannon shots.

I'm gunning for the survivability of an MC. But AV13 with a psychic 5+ cover and venerable would be nasty.

They could make the Dreadknight the exact counter of the Soul Grinder 13/13/11 with fortitude.
