So last we heard was someone got the license to Star Wars minis and it was "someone not known for miniatures" but I've heard nothing since then.
Anyone heard any whispers since?

No official word as of yet. I've been waiting as well. Still kind of disgruntled that Wizards let the license go. And I know there have been players of the wizards game that have been making fan based stuff. There are a lot of possibilities.
1.Skirmish game on similar scale as Star Wars Miniatures (SWM)
2. 40k style war game with various armies battling each other
3. A larger mass scale combat game similar to Flames of War
4. Something akin to Dystopian Wars with air/space/land combat.
5. Something else entirely
And then of course there's the question of era, armies, and how they would represent the Force and Force users.
SWM had 10 factions by the time it finished (Old Republic, Sith, Mandalorian, Republic, Separatist, Imperial, Rebels, New Republic, Yuuzhan Vong, Fringe), and had eras from The Hyperspace Wars to the Legacy Comics.
I have a feeling that whatever they do now is going to have to start back from square one and will likely only have 4-5 factions (Republic, Separtist, Rebel, Imperial, Fringe) or only start with either the prequel era or the rebellion era.
I have a feeling they may avoid doing a new skirmish game since SWM already did that and they may wish to differentiate themselves from it, so my next hope would be for a 40k scale type game, where I can still have individual characters, but also have the larger armies represented, and perhaps have customized characters as well. And it would be cool to have some of the Star Wars tanks and flyers in the game as well.

Everyone else, when asked has said "it wasn't us".
Kinda telling, I think. Maybe they're waiting for Gencon to make an announcement?

Wizards let go of the lisence because their miniature division in general was doing poorly. Axis and Allies miniatures, DnD, Star Wars...all of these attempts ended in them losing money. Their last gasp attempt was to throw some of the older models into that battlefield creating board game under the general Hasbro game umbrella.
Nothing has panned out well for WoTC in attempting to make a dedicated miniatures game. DnD minis was as close as they got, and when they switched to 4th ed from 3.5, the system got killed.

SWM was actually one of their best selling minis games, and a lot of the issue that caused it's downfall they created themselves, despite their official statement that the cost of the license was too high to justify them keeping it.
At first they supported it fairly well, along with D&D minis. Unfortunately, they seemed to lack in a bit of promoting the game and eventually discontinued sending retailers promo figures and prize support. Relatively early into the game, they left a gap between the release of 2 of their sets of about a year, after releasing one of the worst sets they made, and followed a few sets later with another approximately 9 month gap.
Towards the end, and probably what put the final nail in the coffin was that they decided to switch to 40 minis per set rather than 60, and as I recall dropping the number of rares and very rares to 8 and 8. It reduced the time in between sets, but at the same time it also meant that players essentially only needed to buy 2 cases worth of boxes (There were 8 rare boosters and 4 very rare boosters per case) to get 2 full sets of rares and get either a full set of very rares or extras to trade for others. It essentially killed the need to go buying more boosters to go after chase rares.
And on top of this the Star Wars license wasn't quite as popular as it was in 2003-2006 while the prequels were coming out, but the cost of the license apparently hadn't changed to reflect that.

I would add in 'New company bought the rights to the existing CMG game from Wizards' in the same way that the resurrected 'Can't Believe It's Not Wizkids' purchased the rights to continue producing the Heroclix game after Wizkids went guts-up.
I don't think it's all that likely, but it is possible.
On a similar vein, while your number 1 is also possible, I think it's unlikely. Whatever the new game may happen to be, I would very much doubt that it will be in a similar scale to the WotC game, as it would be shooting sales in the foot right off the bat given all those people out there who already have minis.
No. Knight Models are just producing display pieces, not a miniatures game.
So far as any actual news goes, the Star Wars movies start releasing in 3d in cinemas in February. That would seem like an opportune time to launch a new miniatures game based on the licence... particularly if you wanted to go down a similar route to the one GW chose with LOTR, releasing expansions as each movie is released to slowly build the game.

They did make Republic Commando figs to match the ones in the Xbox game in case you didn't catch them. They're OK scuplts but ugly paint jobs though.
As someone who spent over a thousand dollars a year on WOTC products (unknowingly too... I never added it all up until I stopped!), the dropping of SWM pretty much was the final step in WOTC strangely abandoning me as a customer. I used to buy every core 3.5 D&D book and multiple cases of every D&D minis release (I've got the first 10 sets complete) until the switch to 4e (not a fan) and the dropping of DDM as a skirmish game left me as a purely SWM minis customer... and then they killed that. While the D&D minis definitely suffered in quality for the last few "regular" sets (the 60 minis ones that didn't have a visible fig; I didn't buy any of the latter so can't comment there), the SWM ones were quite nice until the very end (albeit at only 40 per set and 2 sets per year).

Warboss, look into Pathfinder if you're looking for an active 3rd edition style game.
It actually takes the best of 3rd edition and adds a little bit of this and that. One of my favorite game systems now.

Pretty much what I thought.
But having spent thousands, and seriously I do mean thousands, on Wizards Star Wars Minis game I'm not sure I want to get into another, especially as I'm playing 40K now now. Guess I'll wait and see but my enthusiasm for Star Wars is sadly dwindling.

Agreed. 3/3.5 wasn't perfect by any means but Pathfinder definitely improves on the formula. Thanks but I've been on the Pathfinder bandwagon since the beta and had the big book preordered!
asparuh13 wrote:thanks, but - exactly how smaller - i mean, do they look strange when they are put next to each other?
They do look a little bit strange next to 40k stuff. The Star Wars figs are realistically proportioned (they look like normal people) whereas the 40k ones are more "heroic" and have overly large heads/weapons/hands as well as short legs in the case of the marines even when taking into account their larger scale to being with. Its a style choice but one that does make them look a bit goofy when put next to each other. The Star Wars figs do work well with 40k vehicles though and the rhino at least looks like it can comfortably hold 10 stormtroopers!
p.s. Yes, I'm aware of the pics showing that 10 marines can actually fit in a hollowed out rhino so no point iin posting the pics that I had on my hard drive for longer than most current 40k players have been out of diapers. Hrumpff!

The Star Wars prepaints were by Wizards of the Coast. That game is defunct. Someone else has supposedly picked up the license, but they haven't revealed themselves so far.

I agree too. I was very sad to see WotC stop producing them, even though I had started 40k at that time, as it was my first miniature wargame and I still played it frequently.
You can still get them easily, Miniature Market and other online retailers still carry them. I like SWM because it is very different from 40k in being a skirmish game and being based on a D20 system, and it is always fun to play it as a break from 40K or other large scale games.
As to SWM being ugly, there were a few that were very badly painted and sculpted near the beginning and end, but overall they had some great paintjobs for pre-painted figures.

SW blu-ray release in September.
SW re-release in 3d 2012.
They'd be fools to not look at releasing in this window, and then when the re-done 3d is released, expand the bubble.

I always thought GW had a massive missed opportunity not making a LoTR style SW game when the new films came out. Something similar in terms of rules, basic with some nice sculpts (storm troopers even have the fighting ability of a goblin) and there is enough material for them to have kept releasing new box sets for a generation.
I'm sure it would still do well now, but the boat has sailed somewhat.

Not sure how much interest that would get, is there a big interest in SG-1?
Although there is also supposed to be a Star Trek starships miniatures game coming out - and I'm not referring to the existing starship miniatures that compliment Starfleet Battles - I think it's going to be by WizKidz, I hope it's not a clix game.
As for Star Wars minis it is a great game and I still play it more than I do 40K. The quality for pre-painted minis is good - sure there are some bad ones (Sand Trooper) but also some great ones (most Boba Fett minis). The gameplay is be fun but I don't think it works well for high point games as the Command effects become abusive.
