I bought a box of Ork Gretchin mostly because I like the way it looks. How would they fit into a battle and what do you normally use them for?

Holding objectives or as meat shields. Drop em in terrain and go to ground the second you get shot at.

Gretchin serve three purposes in 40k.
1. Ringing important units as an assault screen - like Lootas. Units of 5 Lootas or Units of 15 Lootas...they're still vulnerable to things that can get in fast to assault, or deep strike/outflank/ambush (Wolf Scouts, Kommandos with Snikrot). Wrap your Lootas in Gretchin, and now the Lootas can't be assaulted out of the blue.
2. Objective control: 10 Gretchin and a runtheder cost 40 points for 11 models. Their bases are all 1", and they can maintain 2" coherency - meaning that you can get 33" of space with them...meaning that they can simultaneously hold 3 objectives at the same time. Presuming that there is some cover at/around/between objectives, they can go to ground for 3+ cover against shooting. Having a unit of Gretchin available to secure objectives in your rear...and even up to midfield means that your entire army minus 40 points is available to go stomp on your enemy.
3. Deep-strike denial zone. The other use of Gretchin is a physical barrier to deep-striking. Against daemons, drop pods, DoA, etc you can prevent deep-striking melta from getting within 6" of your rear or side armour by setting up a gretchin screen. If you check my battle reports, I have some pictures of doing that with my gretchin during 'Ard Boyz Semi-Finals...think it was game or or two this past year.
Nothing is a bigger waste in an Ork army than orks sitting on objectives. That's what the runts are for.

True, you can also stick a unit of 20 of them in a battlewagon to have a rolling BS3 pistol brigade.

Everything Dash said. But just because it bears repeating (over and over) cheap Grot units in cover are fantastic objective holders. Hell, if you've got an objective on your side of the table, you don't even have to deploy the little buggers. Put 'em in reserve and for a turn or two (or three or four if you're lucky) they can't even be attacked by the enemy. They just walk on the field later in the game to hold an objective (or more than one) and help you win.

That is awesome. I hope someone I play against does this just so I can see it in action.

Or if you don't want to play them as a unit of grots, the models also make great crew for ork artillery, assistants for meks and painboys etc

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

They are also great at shaming your regular opponent
whatever they kill, keep track, eventually you will be in position to knock off something good by chasing his broken squad off the table or delivering that final wound on his HQ.
Once that happens you convert up a special grot to celetrabe the victory, put Dragios head on a spike and have them carry it to battle like a flag.
Your opponent may go on about how many grots he killed over the course of your games, but your an ork. and do orks really care how many grots they lost?
