Hello all,
So you are all aware that GW has a line of Lord of the Rings minis and game.
I was thinking, would it not be great if GW licensed the Starcraft universe and made models that could be played with 5th edition 40K rules?
The protoss, terrans, zerg are great races with great potential for miniature! Imagin, you could have the space marines fight the protoss, the zerg vs. tyranid and terrans against IG!!
Not to mention I really like the look and feel of all the units in starcraft.
I think GW could make a fortune with this if they could license it.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers!

Why not? The Lords of the Rings is a major franchise but they licensed GW to make a whole range of models and a table top game!
Blizzard is in the business of computer games, not table top games so it would not hurt their business - it would only make them money.

Before Activision got their greasy hands on Blizzard, WC and SC were high quality GW ripoffs. Now their IPs are just pathetic.

IIRC Starcraft was supposed to be one of the first 40k games but GW pulled out and Blizzard had to make their own stuff up using the bits they had.

This.
Starcraft began as Blizzard's version of a 40k computer game. Making a TT franchise of a computer franchise originally based on a TT franchise is like putting an orange in a blender, then taking the blended contents and freezing them in the shape of an orange. Sure, most of the content is similar, but really the original product is always going to be better.

If Blizzard really wanted to get into minature gaming, couldn't they just follow the route they took with the World of Warcraft minis? Not really sure how well that line did though.

How are their IPs pathetic? Starcraft has expanded nicely.
I would definitely buy Starcraft miniatures, at least Terran ones. I really like the look of their designs, and I love Starcraft and Starcraft II. I don't think I'd want GW to do them though, as I'd rather a company with less on their plate took on the franchise. GW really doesn't need a new "core game" to fill up the production schedule.

People have some of their facts confused. By the time Starcraft came along, GW and Blizzard had no associations. It was WFB that Blizzard wanted to re-create, but for whatever reasons the deal fell through and they created Warcraft instead. GW couldn't really sue them because they were both just copying tropes from Tolkien.
By the same token, you can't really say Starcraft is ripping off 40K, when both are ripping off Starship Troopers.

This is the best analogy.
But yeah, making a tabletop of Starcraft just doesn't really have any point. Everything Starcraft does is already done better by 40k.

Have you seen or played the first two Warcraft games? Look at the art, especially the way the Orks look. It's lifted practically verbatim from Warhammer at the time (and GW's orc visuals were *very* different from D&D/Tolkien visuals)
Warcraft 1 box art
When this was released, the only Orcs that looked remotely like this...were Warhammer Orcs.
Also keep in mind, Andy Chambers, who wrote 3 editions of 40k, was head of creative development for much of SC2's development.

Why buy SC minatures? Just make your own SM penal chapter?
Expanded on nicely? Bwaahaha, while sc2:terran had decent missions. How the hell did you sit through the ending? That was some Avataresque garbage if I might say so myself. Tychus goes to kill Kerrigan, but Jimmy saves her because he still loves her !!!!( LOLSOBAD) and literally carries her like Terry Shiavo into the sunset.

Joking of course .
But in all seriousness, Starcraft is a rip off of 40k. GW sued them years ago(won fantasy/warcraft) but lost. And i think its ridiculous, the similarities are ridiculous, i mean; TERRAN SPACE MARINES, how drunk/high were these guys when they came up with the idea? Did they think they wouldn't notice? I despise blizzard, and i pray they continue to hemmorage subscribers to WoW and other games of theirs.

I see no reason why GW should make minis for a rip-off like Starcraft, I for one would not buy them.
I have always failed to see the draw of Starcraft, it has the rock paper scissors style of game play (X unit always beats Y unit, but Z unit always beats X unit) like Command and Conquer, only to a worse extent. The few times I have played it I shortly became bored because of its similarity to Command and Conquer and Age of Empires, just in SPACE! Maybe this is just because I am a big RTS gamer and have played many games that have this model but enjoy the ones that lack it more (Empire Total War, Medieval Total War, World in Conflict, Rise of Nations, Dawn of War 1 and 2, ect.)

I doubt that all of 40k has its beginnings in Starship troopers...
Maybe some of it. Certainly Cadians seem to be the generic trooper (movie not book) but i don't see where Eldar or Orks or Necrons etc are in Starship Troopers.
40k took ideas from a lot of places and is, in general, ever changing from each new codex and rulebook the universe changes ever so slightly.
Fantasy is similar but IMO better written, or at least complained about quieter.

I do find it quite amusing that people say Starcraft is a rip off, yet the warhammer universe, both WFB and 40k shamelessly rip off loads of books/films/comics/cartoons. From Tolkien to Aliens, from sci fi manga/anime to classical heroic fiction.
I loved starcraft, it led me to playing DOW, which led me to playing 40k tabletop.
I'm sure I'm not the first to say it. I won't be the last. But when people bang on about how much of a rip off Starcraft is, I can't help but think of pots and kettles.
This is not flamebait, just an observation.

Actually Purplefood is correct. Nothing is ever orginal, some ideas or the fluff around something may be orginal in some shape or form but nothing in this world is orginal. As for 40K ripping off ideas from manga/si-fi/etc. . . most of that is true to a degree, but when you look at it 4GW is using more of a base concept like Orks and Elves, Space Elves etc.
Please remember where WFB and 40K came from. It got started due to a father wanting a game to play with his son diagnosed with Cancer, every thing else is really all pointless compared to that.

I like the original concept of the thread, talking about a tabletop version of SC. I like SC. I like 40k. The problem I have are the "blizzkids" who insist starcraft is the best science fiction evah and wont listen to reason that it is a 40k ripe. I am entitled to my opinion on this subject and feel that I should share it, same as everyone else.

This isn't the place for a 40k/ SC argument, leave that to another board.
