I am just showing what everyone is feeling.
No one is forcing you to look at this thread buddy - ever thought of that? Or does the mere fact that the exists is so offensive to you that you have to whine about it like a little girl?
I like the original concept of the thread, talking about a tabletop version of SC. I like SC. I like 40k. The problem I have are the "blizzkids" who insist starcraft is the best science fiction evah and wont listen to reason that it is a 40k ripe. I am entitled to my opinion on this subject and feel that I should share it, same as everyone else.
Wait, you claim you're entitled to your opinion, and then claim that those that don't share it are unreasonable?
This isn't the place for a 40k/ SC argument, leave that to another board.
Apparently I fail to get my point across. My apologies. Now, I shall leave this thread, never to return, and watch our glorious troll overlords starve.

I can;t believe a presumably grown-ass man is using the word "blizzkids" unironically.
Also, please point out who in this thread has said starcraft is the best science fiction "evah." Wow, meme image macros, "blizzkids" and "evah." You're sure adding a lot to the conversation.

I see what you mean though. That thin, wiry elf with a sword and pistol is really similar to the bulky, purple alien with energy blades coming out of his wrist.
GW did have the trademark on giant space bugs though. There's so many franchises and properties ripping poor GW off like Aliens, Starship Troopers (the book), any comic book from the 1950s, 1920s sci-fi serials, any number of horror movies, etc. I mean, these things predate G.W. but there's always the possibility of those companies using a time machine in their perfidy.
My heart also bleeds when I think of how GW invented a unique visual style with the Tau and then the Japanese created an entire animation style and genre around it. Those crafty bastards!
Zerg are no more a ripoff of Tyranids than Nids are of the film "Alien." Everything is derivative. Being insulting and acting superior when people bring that fact to light makes you look like a jerk.

Why would GW make another line of models that are already very similar to their own? Terran Marines, very similar to Space Marines in design. Zerg, very similar to Tyranids in design. Protoss are more distinct from all GW models in their design, but you'll have to enlighten my if they too are very similar to other GW ideas or other parts of sci-fi in general.

I apologize Lorek, but I can't help it when some neckbeard takes my comments personally and slams his meaty digits into the keyboard with such hostility.
The whole situation was a lot like Rambo: First Blood. "All I wanted was something to eat", Rambo John, J in the form of easy posts to replace my terrible Assault Marine title. But nooo, these guys had to get in my way.
"It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!"

Nothing is original, I don't even know why people try to defend either side.
Besides, there is no need to actually make a side game when you can convert nids into zerg, spaz marines into terran, however making protoss would be tough... Perhaps wraithguard, striking scorpion and ... hmmm... war walkers?
The idea is there, though the starcraft board game is probably as far as it would get. Blizzard probably wouldn't want their players to focus on something else, after all look at flipping WOW.
Also play nice kids. We know that pc gamers are the master race and all, but that's only regarding the console war stuffs. Letting emotion into your post just discredits yourself further.

Protoss are probably more related to Eldar thematically, with the whole "we're a nearly-extinct, ancient, psychically and technologically (particularly teleportation) advanced race created by an even more advanced ancient race that is now fully-extinct, with a populace that follows a rigid and spartan (as in ascetic) warrior-caste system, and since we're low in number we stick the spirit of our dead warriors into machines to keep fighting for Ayer".

This apology sounds sincere. I feel really sad for you that this is the only way you can choose to express yourself.
For the record, I didn't take your comments "personally" and I didn't "slam my meaty digits into my keyboard" with any hostility. I just think it's grade-A douchy to ostracize and belittle other gamers, even going so far as to make up terribly lame names for them because you don't like the game they play. Enjoying 40K doesn't put you any higher in the nerd hierarchy than someone who likes WoW or Magic the Gathering, or any other game. Get over yourself.

Eldar are bigger on symbology, but they Protoss share the sleek vehicles, hovering psychers with lightning storms. There's Fleet of Foot, cloaked assassins.

I was under the impression that GW sued Blizzard for using IP in creating the Zerg(lings?), but when GW lost the lawsuit they st... borrowed the design of the Hydralisk.
As has been said, it's not like either company is clean.
P.S. Most successful companies have only taken ideas that already work and made them more presentable. Diablo, for instance, is the umpteenth Rogue-clone.

It was WFB that Blizzard wanted to re-create, but for whatever reasons the deal fell through and they created Warcraft instead. GW couldn't really sue them because they were both just copying tropes from Tolkien.
By the same token, you can't really say Starcraft is ripping off 40K, when both are ripping off Starship Troopers.
I doubt that all of 40k has its beginnings in Starship troopers...
Maybe some of it. Certainly Cadians seem to be the generic trooper (movie not book) but i don't see where Eldar or Orks or Necrons etc are in Starship Troopers.
40k took ideas from a lot of places and is, in general, ever changing from each new codex and rulebook the universe changes ever so slightly.
Fantasy is similar but IMO better written, or at least complained about quieter.
This. 40K rips off Starship Troopers like Batman rips off Dracula. Both contain bat symbols, and that's pretty much it.
40K takes its influences from everywhere, even other GW games. The analogy presented, then, doesn't really hold up.

There is a major difference between stealing nearly every character design/units+weaponry/backstory from GWs tabletop game for starcraft/warcraft and taking generalized elements from various sources(elves, gothic architecture, modern military warfare elements). Warhammer 40k uses a lot of roman elements (legions, empire/emperor, gladius, latin names, etc) but they are not directly copying these things. That is the main difference I see between the two and why I feel like Blizzard is initially in the wrong here.

Andy Chambers, formerly of GW is project lead on StarCraft 2. Andy is going to write a book for Black Library as well or so the rumor goes. Blizzard, since its inception has had some sort of relationship on and off with GW. Also If your game has an Orc in it your ripping off Tolkien. They get around it somewhat by spelling it with a k for Ork....

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

Starcraft is a game I enjoy. The background is pretty cool, the gameplay is ace, and it is razor-edged balanced with amazing mod support. Great. Still a copy of 40K. More Warhammer in space is cool, so "warcraft in space" would be cool too! But the paralells are humerously blatant in WC1, when it was an aborted atempt at a WFB RTS that they had to quicky change the names of units, ect. Also, I have lost friends to WoW, and despise it as such.
